In plain English
An IP address is the number your internet connection uses to send and receive data, rather like the number on your front door. Websites need it to send each page back to you, which is why every site you visit can see it. The older IPv4 kind is four numbers separated by dots; the newer IPv6 kind is longer and uses colons.
- Step 1: proxy off
- Turn your proxy off and make a note of the address at the top of this page. That one belongs to your own connection.
- Step 2: proxy on
- Turn the proxy on in this same browser, then reload the page.
- Step 3: compare
- A new address means the proxy is doing its job. If your old one is still showing, the proxy is probably set up somewhere else, such as in another browser or for one app only.
About the other two boxes: reverse DNS is a name some networks give their addresses, and it often hints at the provider (if none is set, you'll see the address again or a dash). The User-Agent is the line in which your browser tells sites what it is. Your proxy changes the first, because it comes from the IP, but not the second.
