Why a Hong Kong IP reaches Google but won't make you a mainland user
Hong Kong's internet is open, unlike the mainland's, so Google, YouTube and WhatsApp work there as usual, while local sites answer in Traditional Chinese or English. With a Hong Kong IP address, the number that tells websites where you're connecting from, any site with a Hong Kong edition shows it: prices in Hong Kong dollars and the deals, menus and listings residents see.
Why people use one
Planning a trip by reading restaurant reviews on OpenRice the way locals see them, checking HKTVmall prices in Hong Kong dollars, or reading Hong Kong news sites in Chinese or English as residents do.
Traditional characters and Cantonese
Hong Kong uses Traditional Chinese characters, not the Simplified ones used on the mainland, and people speak Cantonese rather than Mandarin day to day. English is an official language too, so many sites offer an English version.
UTC+8, no summer time
Hong Kong keeps UTC+8 all year and dropped summer time after 1979, so the gap to your own clock only changes when your country changes its clocks.
Not a way into the mainland
A Hong Kong IP won't make mainland Chinese apps treat you as a mainland user, and many still ask for a mainland phone number. Whatever a site's terms say about where users must live still holds with a Hong Kong IP.
Simple first projects in Hong Kong
Whatever you use it for, the law where you live and each website's terms still apply, and our acceptable use policy lists what we never allow.
The basics, in plain English
Websites read your IP address, your connection's number online, to work out where you are. A proxy lends you one of ours from the country you pick; your language settings, clock, card and delivery address stay as they are, and sites you sign in to still know it's you.
