Etsy with a proxy? Try Etsy's own settings first
In plain English, a proxy routes your browsing through a computer somewhere else, so Etsy thinks you're shopping from that computer's country. For most shoppers and small sellers that changes little, because Etsy already lets you choose region, language and currency in the site's footer. A proxy only adds the full first-visit view from another country, which is handy for checking your own listing as a buyer abroad sees it.
Start with the footer, not a proxy
Scroll to the bottom of an Etsy page on a computer and you'll find region, language and currency choices. Changing them is free, uses none of your proxy data, and answers most questions about what something costs in another currency.
Which type, if you still want one
Pick residential, an address a home broadband provider handed out, since the point is to see what a shopper at home there sees. Datacenter addresses come from server buildings and cost less per GB, but Etsy may treat them differently, so the view can differ from a real shopper's.
Where the setting goes
Etsy's app has nowhere to type a proxy, so a computer is the easier place for this check: add the proxy to a second browser and keep your shop signed in on the usual one. On a phone, it goes in the Wi-Fi network's details.
Lines not to cross
Don't open a second shop to get round a suspension, and don't review your own items from another account; both go against Etsy's rules whatever address you use. Manage your shop on your normal connection and keep the proxy for looking around.
Quick start in three steps
Nothing to install. This is the whole route, from paying to the first page you load through the proxy.
Buy a small Residential plan
Choose a small bundle, or just the GB (gigabytes of data) you need, and pay. Then, under My Plans → Proxy Configuration in your dashboard, set the country, the protocol, and sticky (one address that stays put) or rotating (a new one each time).
Add it to one browser
Put the proxy in one browser, or one browser profile, and browse signed out. Your own shopping or seller account stays on your normal connection.
Check that it worked
With the proxy switched on, open our IP checker: it should show the proxy's address, not your own. The IP location lookup then tells you which country that address is in, and if anything looks wrong, the quick fixes further down cover the usual slips. About to log in somewhere? Switch to a sticky session first, so the address stays put.
Our pick for Etsy: Residential
Etsy is a marketplace of individual makers and the people who buy from them, so the visitors it expects look like people at home. A residential proxy gives you an address that an everyday internet provider handed to a home in the country you choose, which fits that pattern. For a small seller, its real job is showing your shop and other listings as a buyer in another country sees them. Running the shop itself needs no proxy.
One household IP per shop
For a one-person shop the answer is simple: one shop, managed from your own connection, where Etsy already recognises your sign-ins. An extra address doesn't make a second shop acceptable. Whether you may open another is decided by Etsy's seller policy, so read it before you try.
Listing & price research at scale
Small sellers rarely need scale. Studying twenty similar listings by hand teaches you more about pricing, photos and tags than a spreadsheet of thousands. Do it signed out, with the proxy set to the market you want to reach, and note what the listings near the top have in common.
Accurate geo-pricing checks
On Etsy, geo-pricing is mostly currency conversion plus shipping, so the useful check is whether your listing ships to a country at all and what delivery estimate it shows there. If a market you want says the item won't ship there, the fix is in your shipping settings, not in a proxy.
Authentication your tools expect
The tool most beginners use is a web browser. Its proxy settings take the host and port; the username and password come up in a pop-up the first time it connects. If a device can't save a password, add your home IP to the whitelist in your dashboard so it connects without one.
What a proxy won't do here
It won't change what you pay at checkout, which usually follows your account and delivery address. And one shopper stays one shopper, whatever address they use.
What people use it for
- ▸Viewing your shop as an overseas buyer
- ▸Checking shipping shown to other countries
- ▸Studying similar listings before pricing
- ▸Searching your keywords in another market
Which proxy type should I pick for Etsy?
Residential is the sensible starting point here. Datacenter costs less when a site accepts server addresses; mobile and premium earn their higher price only in the cases described below.
| Type | Choose it when… | From, per GB |
|---|---|---|
| Datacenter | Cost matters most and the site is happy with addresses from server companies. Good for public pages and first experiments. | $2.49 |
| Residential Our pick for Etsy | A site turns server addresses away, or you want to see it the way a local visitor does. The address belongs to a home broadband line. | $3.98 |
| Mobile 4G/5G | The service is built around phones, or you want to see it as someone on 4G or 5G would. The address comes from a phone network. | $4.98 |
| Residential Premium | Standard residential keeps being refused on one particular site. Hand-picked home addresses, at a higher price per GB. | $6.99 |
Choosing a country: Pick the country whose version of the shop you want to see, because prices, stock and delivery options often change with it. There are 55+ countries, and in major markets some types let you pick a city too. Browse locations
For the longer version, our proxy comparison walks through all four types.
What you need to browse shops through a proxy
Wherever you set it up, you type in the same four details from your dashboard: the host (the proxy's address), the port (a number that tells the connection which door to use), a username and a password.
In one browser
Firefox has its own proxy settings, so only Firefox uses the proxy. On Windows and Mac, Chrome and Edge follow the computer's settings instead.
Setting it up somewhere else? Step-by-step guides:
Two ways to log in to the proxy
- ▸Username and password. The
host:port:user:passdetails that browsers, apps and scripts ask for. - ▸IP whitelist. Add your own IP address to the list in your dashboard and connections from it need no password. Handy where there's nowhere to type one, such as Android's Wi-Fi proxy screen.
Which protocol?
A protocol is the language your device uses to talk to the proxy. Every proxy works over HTTP, HTTPS and SOCKS5; if an app asks for SOCKS5 by name, give it SOCKS5 details, and put HTTP details in an HTTP box.
Common slip-ups, and the quick fix for each
When something feels off on a first try, it's often one of these.
Logging in on a rotating address
Rotating means a new address for every request; sticky means one address kept for 1-30 minutes. Use sticky for anything you sign in to, or the site may log you out halfway through.
A slip in the proxy details
One wrong character in the host, port, username or password and nothing connects. Copy them again from your dashboard and try them in our proxy checker. Using the IP whitelist? Home IP addresses change now and then, so check yours with the IP checker and update the list.
Signing in to your own account through a far-away proxy
A login from a new country can bring a security code, extra checks or a paused account. Shop and sell from your usual connection, and keep the proxy for signed-out looking around.
Pages load slowly
Home connections vary in speed. Pick a proxy country nearer to you and try again before changing anything else.
Proxy not working when it arrives? Tell us within 24 hours of delivery and we'll swap it, or refund that part of the order if we can't (see the refund policy). Support answers 24/7 through the contact page.
Is a proxy for Etsy allowed?
Using a proxy is legal in most countries (a few restrict them), so the question is what you do through it: stick to public information and your own accounts, at a sensible pace, within the service's terms and the law where you live.
Shops and release draws set their own limits, often one account or one entry per person. A second address doesn't make you a second person, and accounts that break those limits can be closed whatever connection they use.
If personal data is involved, data-protection law applies as well, and no proxy can protect an account from a platform's own decisions.
Keeping the cost down
You pay for data by the GB, never for time, so set the proxy in the one browser or app that needs it and switch it off when you're done.
Start with a small order
Buy a little Residential data first, at $3.98 per GB, and try it where you need it. Top up once it works.
Use it within 30 days
Each order runs for 30 days from payment, and GB you haven't used don't carry over, so buy for the weeks ahead rather than the year.
Match the type to the site
Leave easy sites on datacenter and send only the stubborn ones through residential, mobile or premium. Mixing types keeps the bill small.
