An Australian IP for beginners: AUD prices, several time zones and a few honest limits
Many big sites have Australian versions, from Amazon.com.au to eBay Australia, with their own prices, stock and deals. An Australian proxy shows you those pages the way people in Australia see them. That's useful in more situations than you might expect, and it has limits worth knowing.
Who finds it useful
Reasons range from the practical, like finding a room on Flatmates.com.au or a rental on Domain before a working holiday, to the everyday, like comparing JB Hi-Fi console prices with home, or making sure your own shop shows Australian dollars.
Aussie English
Australian spelling follows British habits, so it's colour and organise, and dates are written day first. Expect slang in adverts and reviews: arvo means afternoon, servo a petrol station and brekkie breakfast.
Which Australian time?
Australia spans several time zones, and only New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and the ACT change their clocks, from early October to early April. In summer, Sydney is UTC+11 while Brisbane stays on UTC+10 and Perth on UTC+8, so check which city a deadline or sale uses.
Still off the table
ABC iview and SBS On Demand hold rights for audiences in Australia, so their terms don't allow overseas viewing, whatever IP you use. Shops still deliver only where they normally deliver, and your own bank still handles any payment.
Simple first projects in Australia
Whatever you use it for, the law where you live and each website's terms still apply, and our acceptable use policy lists what we never allow.
The basics, in plain English
Websites read your IP address, your connection's number online, to work out where you are. A proxy lends you one of ours from the country you pick; your language settings, clock, card and delivery address stay as they are, and sites you sign in to still know it's you.
