IST, rupees and banned apps: what an Indian IP changes
India bans some apps outright, TikTok among them since 2020, and its websites switch between English, Hindi and regional languages, with prices in rupees. With an Indian IP address, the label your connection carries online, sites assume you're somewhere like Mumbai or Delhi, which lets people abroad see shops, apps and news the way family back home does.
Marketplaces, regional news and trips home
Checking how a product you sell looks on Indian marketplaces, reading regional news in Tamil or Bengali as local readers do, or seeing which offers an Indian travel app shows before you book a trip home.
Apps that are blocked
India banned TikTok and a long list of other Chinese apps in 2020. An Indian connection is no route to them; you'd hit the same wall people in India hit.
IST, Hindi and English
India Standard Time is five and a half hours ahead of UTC, written UTC+5:30, and there's no daylight saving. Hindi and English are used across the country alongside many regional languages, so a site may ask which one you prefer.
IRCTC and other booking rules
IRCTC, the railway's official booking site, bans bots and automated booking tools, and a proxy doesn't change its rules or anyone else's. Book through the official site or app yourself, and treat every site's terms as still in force through a proxy.
