Room hunting, Frisian and order deadlines: a Dutch IP for newcomers
Moving to Utrecht for a semester, or just curious how Dutch shops price things? Connect through a Dutch proxy and sites see an address in the Netherlands, then respond as they would to someone there: Dutch pages, prices in euros, local delivery options. It stops at the address, though: a Dutch IP won't give you a Dutch bank account or change any website's rules.
Studying or moving there
Students and new arrivals often hunt for rooms on Kamernet and Pararius, which open from anywhere, so a Dutch IP is optional there. The more useful habit is caution: never pay a deposit before you have seen the place and checked who the landlord is.
Dutch on screen
Most Dutch sites are in Dutch, and larger ones usually have an English version behind an EN button. In the northern province of Friesland you may also meet Frisian, which is an official language there; Google Translate covers both Dutch and Frisian.
Order deadlines and the clock
Many Dutch web shops, Coolblue among them, promise next-day delivery for orders placed before midnight. That deadline runs on Amsterdam time, an hour ahead of London's, so an order you place late in a UK evening may already count as the next day.
Simple first projects in the Netherlands
Whatever you use it for, the law where you live and each website's terms still apply, and our acceptable use policy lists what we never allow.
The basics, in plain English
Websites read your IP address, your connection's number online, to work out where you are. A proxy lends you one of ours from the country you pick; your language settings, clock, card and delivery address stay as they are, and sites you sign in to still know it's you.
