Decimal commas, quiet Sundays and postcode searches: a German IP for beginners
Buying a present for a friend in Hamburg, or pricing a laptop at MediaMarkt before a move to Berlin? Through a German proxy, sites such as Otto and MediaMarkt see an IP address in Germany and show the prices, delivery options and offers people there get. Google also answers as it would for a search made in Germany, which helps if you're testing your own German pages.
German formats at a glance
In German prices the comma does the job of a decimal point, the euro sign often comes after the number, and dates are written with dots, day first. Next to a price, 'inkl. MwSt.' means VAT is included, and 'zzgl. Versand' means delivery costs extra.
Classifieds work by postcode
Kleinanzeigen, Germany's big classifieds site, shows items near the town or postcode you type in, not near your IP address. Set the place you care about in the search box; the proxy mainly helps with sites that treat visitors from abroad differently.
Berlin time and quiet Sundays
German clocks match Paris and Rome all year and run an hour ahead of London's. Clock changes fall on the same March and October weekends EU-wide. Most shops close on Sundays, though online orders still go through.
Rules and delivery limits
Plenty of German shops ship only inside Germany or the EU, and checkout asks for a matching address. A German IP doesn't change where a shop will ship or who may use its offers, and each shop's own terms stay in force for you.
Simple first projects in Germany
Whatever you use it for, the law where you live and each website's terms still apply, and our acceptable use policy lists what we never allow.
The basics, in plain English
Websites read your IP address, your connection's number online, to work out where you are. A proxy lends you one of ours from the country you pick; your language settings, clock, card and delivery address stay as they are, and sites you sign in to still know it's you.
