Mercari, eShop and TVer: Japan IPs for newcomers
Shopping guides for Japan use the word proxy for two very different things, and mixing them up is an easy beginner mistake. This page is about the network kind: a Japanese IP address, which Japanese sites read as a sign you're at home in Japan, so they show their local versions. Two limits apply: shops still decide whether to ship abroad, and every site's rules stay as they are.
Popular reasons
Browsing Mercari for anime goods and trading cards, comparing electronics prices on Kakaku.com before a trip, or seeing how a Japanese game's official site presents news to players in Japan.
Proxy versus proxy service
Guides to buying from Japan talk about proxy services, companies such as Buyee that buy items for you and ship them abroad. A network proxy is a different thing: it only changes your IP address, so it can't buy, receive or post anything.
JST and three scripts
Japan doesn't change its clocks and sits at UTC+9, so it's nine hours ahead of the UK in winter and eight in summer. Japanese mixes three scripts, hiragana, katakana and kanji, and browser translation helps a lot.
Nintendo eShop regions
The Nintendo eShop region follows your Nintendo Account's country setting, not your IP, so a Japanese proxy won't switch it. Game and shop terms apply in full whichever country your IP appears to be in, so read them before you buy.
Simple first projects in Japan
Whatever you use it for, the law where you live and each website's terms still apply, and our acceptable use policy lists what we never allow.
The basics, in plain English
Websites read your IP address, your connection's number online, to work out where you are. A proxy lends you one of ours from the country you pick; your language settings, clock, card and delivery address stay as they are, and sites you sign in to still know it's you.
