Train fares, Ferragosto and named tickets: an Italian IP for trips and shopping
Most Italian sites speak Italian first and follow a calendar of their own, with many small shops pausing around Ferragosto in mid-August. An Italian proxy, a go-between computer in Italy, lets you see shop prices, train fares and your own pages the way visitors in Rome or Milan get them. Italian rules on named tickets and pirated streams still apply to you.
Planning a trip
Italy's high-speed trains are mainly run by Trenitalia and Italo, and both sell tickets online with fares that change as seats fill. Checking both for the same journey, such as Rome to Florence, is the useful habit; an Italian address simply shows their sites in the local version.
Language and clock
Almost every Italian site is in Italian first, and many bigger ones add English, as the FAQ explains. Italy runs on Central European Time, so an evening Serie A kick-off in Milan comes an hour earlier on a London clock, in summer and winter alike.
The mid-August slowdown
Many Italian businesses close or slow down around Ferragosto, the public holiday in mid-August, and some take the whole week. If you're ordering from a small Italian shop or waiting for a reply then, expect delays that have nothing to do with your proxy.
Pirated streams are fined
Italian law can fine viewers of pirated football or film streams, not only the people who run them. A proxy doesn't make an unofficial stream legal, and official services' terms still decide who may watch, so stick to what each service allows.
Simple first projects in Italy
Whatever you use it for, the law where you live and each website's terms still apply, and our acceptable use policy lists what we never allow.
The basics, in plain English
Websites read your IP address, your connection's number online, to work out where you are. A proxy lends you one of ours from the country you pick; your language settings, clock, card and delivery address stay as they are, and sites you sign in to still know it's you.
