TTC prices, French-only shops and Paris time: why you might want a French IP
Leboncoin for second-hand finds, Fnac for books and electronics and SNCF Connect for trains are everyday French sites, and many smaller French shops have no English version at all. A French proxy lets websites treat your visit as coming from France, so you see euro prices, French delivery options and the storefront a French user gets.
Everyday reasons
Planning a study year in Lyon or a summer in Nice? International shops often pick your country from your IP address, the number that identifies your connection online, so a French one opens their French storefront, with euro prices and delivery options for France.
Language and time
Expect most French pages to be in French; your browser's translate button helps. France's clock is one hour ahead of the UK's all year, so a sale that ends at midnight in Paris ends at eleven in the evening in London.
Reading French prices
French prices marked TTC, toutes taxes comprises, include all taxes and are what a shopper pays before delivery. HT, hors taxes, means before VAT and mostly appears on business sites. Compare the TTC figure with prices at home, then add delivery.
Ticket resale and other rules
A proxy changes your address, not the rules. Each site's terms still apply, and so does French law: repeatedly reselling concert or match tickets without the organiser's permission, for example, is an offence in France whatever IP you use.
Simple first projects in France
Whatever you use it for, the law where you live and each website's terms still apply, and our acceptable use policy lists what we never allow.
The basics, in plain English
Websites read your IP address, your connection's number online, to work out where you are. A proxy lends you one of ours from the country you pick; your language settings, clock, card and delivery address stay as they are, and sites you sign in to still know it's you.
