Residential Proxies in plain English

A residential proxy sends your requests through a household internet connection, using an address that an ordinary broadband provider (an ISP) gave to that home. To the website, you look like any other person browsing from the place you picked.

That is why sites turn residential IPs away less often than datacenter ones. Two honest caveats: at the pay-as-you-go rate of $3.98 a GB they cost more than datacenter, and speed varies a little more, because home connections vary. The people whose connections form the network have agreed to take part.

Behind the scenes, every proxy type works the same basic way. Your browser or app sends each request to our server, our server passes it on to the website, and the reply comes back to you along the same path, so the website only ever sees our IP address. Each order lasts 30 days, and the choice of HTTP, HTTPS or SOCKS5 is yours.

Quick start in 3 steps

You don't need a server or any special software. If you can change a setting in your browser, you can do this.

1

Settle on an amount of data

Each order lasts 30 days, so pick an amount you'll use in that time. Unsure? The proxy calculator gives you a rough figure.

2

Pick a bundle and pay

Choose one of the bundles below, or your own number of GB. Once you've paid, open My Plans → Proxy Configuration in your dashboard to set the country, rotating or sticky, and the protocol. You can change them whenever you like.

3

Paste the details in

Open the proxy settings in your browser, app or script and type in the four details from your dashboard: host, port, username and password. Then visit our My IP tool: if it shows the proxy's address rather than yours, you're connected.

Which type should I pick?

A simple rule: use the lowest-priced type that works on the sites you visit, and only move up when you have to. Here is a quick check for this page, then all four types side by side.

Residential Proxies suit you if…

  • ✓A site you need keeps turning away datacenter IPs.
  • ✓You want to see a website the way a local visitor in another country sees it, prices included.
  • ✓You have to stay on the same address while you finish something, such as signing in.

Pick another type if…

  • →The sites you use are happy with server traffic. Datacenter does the same job for less.
  • →Your task revolves around phone apps. Mobile IPs fit that better.
Type 1 GB costs How far sites trust it Speed Source of the IPs Good for
Datacenter Proxies $2.49 Good Very fast (1 Gbps) Servers in data centres First projects, scripts and SEO checks
Residential Proxies This page $3.98 High Fast Home broadband lines Sites that turn away server IPs
Mobile 4G / 5G Proxies $4.98 Very high Fast 4G and 5G phone networks Phone apps and social platforms
Residential Premium Proxies $6.99 Very high, hand-picked Fast Hand-picked home lines Sites that refuse standard residential

Torn between two types? Price the same job for each in the proxy calculator and compare.

Residential data bundles

Pick a bundle of data. Bigger bundles cost less per GB, but each one lasts 30 days, so choose an amount you will actually use in that time. After paying, you set the country and everything else in your dashboard.

Included in every bundle:

  • ✓How you log in:
Username & password, or IP whitelist
  • ✓Where you appear:
Choose a state, a city or an internet provider

Four things to have ready

You probably have the first one already. The other three are simple choices, explained below.

1. Something with proxy settings

Most web browsers, many apps and the usual coding tools have a place to enter a proxy. If you write code, our proxies also work with tools such as these:

Scrapy Puppeteer Playwright Selenium cURL Python Requests Node.js Axios

Free tools and setup help →

2. A way to log in

Username and password. Works from any network, so it suits a laptop or phone whose own IP address changes as you move about.

IP whitelist. You register your own IP address and the proxy lets you in without a password. Best for a computer that keeps the same address. You can change your choice later in the dashboard.

3. The right protocol

A protocol is the "language" your app uses to talk to the proxy. HTTP and HTTPS cover normal websites (our HTTPS proxies page explains more). SOCKS5 can carry other kinds of traffic as well, which some apps need; see SOCKS5 proxies. You get all three with any plan, and moving from one to another in the dashboard costs nothing.

4. A place to appear from

Choose from 55+ countries, and a city in the bigger markets. On datacenter and mobile you pick it on the order form; on residential and premium you pick it in your dashboard after paying. Handy for seeing local prices, or for viewing your own website the way visitors abroad do.

Look through the countries →

Same IP, or a new one each time?

This setting decides whether your address changes between requests. A request is simply each page, picture or file your browser or app asks a website for.

Rotating: a fresh IP each time

Each request leaves from a different address. That suits looking through lots of separate pages, such as a long list of prices. There is more on our rotating proxies page.

Sticky: one IP for a while

You keep one address for a set time. Choose this for anything where you stay logged in or click through several pages in a row. If you want an address that doesn't change at all, read about static proxies.

What comes with Residential Proxies

✓

Addresses from real homes

Each IP comes from an ordinary broadband provider (an ISP) and belongs to a household, so nothing labels it as a server.

✓

Country, city or provider

Choose a country, narrow it to a city, or pick the internet provider itself (its ASN, the ID number of its network), and your traffic starts from there.

✓

Same IP or a fresh one

Keep one address for between 1 and 30 minutes (a sticky session), or take a new one with each request (rotation).

✓

Fits the apps you use

HTTP and SOCKS5 both work, so you can enter the details in the browsers, apps and scripts you already have.

✓

Plenty of places to appear

55+ countries to choose from, with a choice of city in dozens of them.

✓

Charged by data, not time

Your bill depends on how much data you use, never on how long you stay connected.

Why it works on a small budget

When money is tight, you want costs you can predict and no waiting about. Here is what that looks like day to day.

✓

One price list, no extras

Your money goes on data and nothing else. There is no contract, no setup fee, and nothing renews by itself.

✓

Ready the moment you pay

Nobody checks your order by hand, so there is no queue. The login details are in your dashboard within moments of the payment going through.

✓

Change your mind later

Switch between HTTP, HTTPS and SOCKS5, or between a password and an IP whitelist, in the dashboard. You never need to buy again to do it.

✓

Choose where you appear

Pick from 55+ countries, plus a city in the bigger markets, so websites show you what a local visitor would see.

✓

Help from real people

Stuck on a setting? Write to support and a real person will help, 24/7/365.

Your browsing stays yours

We don't record the sites you visit, so your browsing history isn't sitting on our servers. Each site's own terms still apply to what you do there.

App and website makers

Check that your own site or app shows the right language, prices and features to visitors in other countries.

Mistakes beginners make, and how to avoid them

Each of these wastes either money or an afternoon, and all of them are easy to sidestep.

Buying more data than you'll use

Every order lasts 30 days from payment, and whatever is unused by then simply expires. Start small and top up when you need more.

Using rotating IPs for a login

If your address changes halfway through signing in, the site may log you out. Use a sticky session for anything that keeps you logged in.

Whitelisting the wrong IP

The whitelist only lets in the address you registered. Move to another connection, say a café's Wi-Fi or your phone's data, and you'll be refused until you add the new address in the dashboard or switch to username and password.

Not setting a country

Skip it and your IP may come from a country you didn't mean to use, so local prices and search results look wrong. Set it before you start, on the order form or in the dashboard.

Expecting a proxy to change the rules

A proxy changes the route your traffic takes, nothing more. Each site's terms still apply, and logging in tells a site who you are whatever your IP.

Tip: sign in on a sticky session

Signing in or filling in a form? Switch to a sticky session first. If the address changes halfway through, the site may end your session and you will have to start again.

Is using a proxy allowed?

Usually, yes. In most countries proxies are legal to use, and people use them every day for ordinary things such as checking prices, testing websites, research and privacy. The proxy itself is rarely the issue; what you do through it can be.

Two sets of rules still apply to you: the law where you live, and each website's own terms of service. Our acceptable use policy spells out what is never allowed on our network, including fraud, hacking, spreading malware and harassment. Please read it before you start, not after something goes wrong.

About the IPs themselves: they are on our network by agreement with the people and companies they belong to, and we don't keep a record of the sites you visit through them. That privacy is there for ordinary, lawful use. It never covers breaking a site's rules.

Beginner questions, answered

What makes an IP address residential?

It is an address an internet provider has given to a home broadband line, the same kind your own router probably has. Websites see an ordinary household visitor rather than a server, which is why fewer of them turn residential IPs away.

Should I buy a bundle or pay as I go?

Bigger bundles bring the price of each GB down. The catch: every order expires 30 days after you pay, used or not, and unused GB don't move to your next order. If you're just starting, the 1 GB pay-as-you-go option or a small bundle is the safer buy.

I've never used a proxy. Is it hard to set up?

Not really, and there is nothing to install. After you pay, your dashboard lists four details: a host (the proxy's address), a port number, a username and a password. Enter them wherever your browser, app or script asks for proxy settings and you're connected. We also send a confirmation email with a link straight to your dashboard.

How exactly am I charged?

By data, not by time. Pay-as-you-go data costs $3.98 per GB on this page, and the hours you spend connected cost nothing. You pay for an order once, and you then have 30 days, counted from the moment the payment clears, to use it. It doesn't renew, and any GB you haven't used by then expire instead of moving to your next order.

Can I test it without spending much?

Yes: keep your first order small. Start with 1 GB, check that the proxy works with your browser or app, and only buy more once you're happy with it.

With a proxy on, can websites still tell it's me?

Websites see our IP address in place of yours, and we don't log the sites you visit. A proxy won't make you invisible, though. Logging in, cookies and your browser itself can all tell a site who you are, and its rules still apply to you.

What if something doesn't work?

Contact support. Real people answer at any hour, every day of the year. Open a ticket from your dashboard or use the contact page, and tell us which proxy type you bought and what you were trying to do.

Start small, top up later

Pay, and your login details are ready in the dashboard. Nothing renews behind your back. Got a friend who needs proxies too? Refer them and you earn 10% commission on every order they pay for.

Residential proxies route your traffic through genuine home and ISP IP addresses assigned by internet service providers to real households. Because each request leaves from an ordinary broadband connection rather than a server farm, residential IPs are ideal for tasks that demand location-accurate, trustworthy origins. At Budget Proxies you can buy them from just $3.98/GB on a pay-as-you-go basis with a fixed 30-day validity, no contracts and no logs.

This page goes beyond the headline price to explain exactly what residential proxies are, how the network works, and where they deliver real value, from ad verification and price intelligence to SEO rank tracking and location-accurate research. You will find practical guidance on authentication, rotation versus sticky sessions, country and city targeting across 55+ locations, and how residential compares with our datacenter, mobile and premium tiers so you can match the right product to your workload.

What residential proxies are and how they work

A residential proxy is an intermediary that carries your request through an IP address belonging to a real residential or ISP connection. When you send traffic to the gateway, Budget Proxies forwards it through one of these home IPs, the destination site responds to that address, and we relay the answer back to you. The target server sees a household broadband address rather than yours.

The key difference from server-based IPs is provenance. Residential addresses are allocated by consumer ISPs and carry the reputation of everyday users, whereas datacenter ranges are registered to hosting companies and are easier to identify in bulk. That authenticity is what makes residential proxies suited to location-sensitive work.

Our pool spans 55+ countries and supports HTTP, HTTPS and SOCKS5, so you can plug the same credentials into browsers, scrapers and command-line tools. You can verify the IP you are presenting at any time with our my-IP tool.

Why residential is the right choice for location-accurate work

Some tasks fundamentally depend on where the request appears to come from. A search result, an advert or a localised price can change entirely based on the visitor's apparent country, city or ISP. Datacenter IPs often resolve to a hosting region that does not reflect a real consumer footprint, which can skew what you see.

Residential proxies solve this because the IP genuinely sits inside a consumer network in the location you target. That makes them the natural fit for:

  • Ad verification — confirming that creatives render correctly to real users in specific markets.
  • SEO and SERP monitoring — capturing accurate, geo-localised rankings.
  • Price and catalogue research — viewing offers exactly as a local shopper would.
  • Brand and compliance checks — auditing how your content appears regionally.

If your workload is purely about raw throughput on tolerant endpoints, a cheaper datacenter proxy may serve you better. Residential earns its premium precisely when authenticity and geography matter.

Setting up and configuring your residential proxies

Getting started takes minutes. After purchase your access details are delivered instantly, and you can authenticate in one of two ways:

  1. Username and password — paste the supplied credentials into any client that accepts proxy authentication. This is the most portable option and works from any network.
  2. IP whitelisting — register your server's outbound IP so traffic is authorised automatically without sending credentials, which suits fixed-IP environments.

You will receive a gateway host and port for each protocol. For a browser, enter the host, port and credentials in the connection settings. For a scraper, set the proxy in your HTTP client; for example, point your library's proxy parameter at the gateway URL with embedded credentials.

Targeting and rotation are controlled through the username string or session parameters, which we cover in the geo-targeting and rotation sections below. If a request fails to authenticate, the usual cause is a typo in the port or an outbound IP that has not been whitelisted. See our FAQ for protocol-specific snippets.

Tools and integrations that work with residential proxies

Because our gateways speak standard HTTP, HTTPS and SOCKS5, residential proxies drop into virtually any stack without custom code.

  • Browsers and multi-profile tools — set the proxy per profile, and only run separate profiles for accounts the platform allows.
  • Scraping frameworks — request libraries, headless browsers and automation toolkits all accept a proxy URL; see proxies for scraping for patterns.
  • Command-line tools — pass the gateway as an environment variable or flag for ad-hoc checks.
  • SEO platforms — many rank trackers and crawlers expose a proxy field for geo-accurate data collection.

For SOCKS5 you gain support beyond plain web traffic, which is useful for tooling that tunnels non-HTTP protocols. Whichever client you use, the same credentials and gateway apply, so you can move a working configuration between tools with minimal change. When you need to confirm the exit IP a particular tool is using, route a quick lookup through our my-IP tool.

Rotating versus sticky residential sessions

Residential proxies at Budget Proxies support two session styles, and choosing correctly is one of the biggest levers on success rates.

Rotating sessions assign a fresh residential IP on each request (or each connection), spreading activity across many addresses. This suits high-volume, stateless work such as gathering thousands of independent SERP snapshots or price points, where every request stands alone.

Sticky sessions hold the same residential IP for a defined window, typically several minutes, so a sequence of related requests shares one origin. This is essential whenever continuity matters: logging into an account, stepping through a multi-page flow, or maintaining a shopping basket.

NeedUse
Bulk independent requestsRotating
Multi-step or logged-in flowsSticky

You select the mode through your session parameters. If you specifically need long-lived, unchanging IPs, look at our static proxies; for broad rotation strategy see rotating proxies.

Country and city geo-targeting across 55+ locations

Precise geography is the headline feature of residential proxies. Our pool covers 55+ countries, and many of them down to city level, so you can present an origin that matches exactly the market you are studying.

Targeting is controlled through your username parameters: specify a country code to pin all traffic to that nation, and add a city value where you need finer granularity. For example, you might route one job through addresses in Germany and another through London-based IPs, all from the same account.

This precision is what makes residential proxies trustworthy for ad verification and localised SEO, where a result must reflect a genuine local viewpoint. It also matters for catalogue and availability checks that differ by region.

A practical tip: confirm your selected geography with the my-IP tool before launching a large run, so you know the location parameters resolved as intended. If a specific city is sparsely covered, broadening to the country level keeps success rates high while staying accurate to the market.

Speed, performance and concurrency

Residential proxies route through real consumer connections, so latency naturally varies more than on a datacenter line; you trade a little raw speed for authentic origins. In practice the network is fast enough for browsing, scraping and verification at scale, backed by 99.9% uptime.

To get the best throughput:

  • Run concurrent requests rather than relying on single-IP speed. Residential performance scales horizontally, so parallelism beats brute force.
  • Set sensible timeouts and retries so a slow exit node is replaced rather than blocking your pipeline.
  • Reuse sticky sessions for multi-step flows to avoid the overhead of re-establishing context on every request.

Because billing is per gigabyte, your cost tracks data transferred rather than time connected, so efficient requests, compressed responses and avoiding unnecessary asset downloads all reduce spend while improving speed. If your workload tolerates server IPs and you want maximum raw speed, compare against datacenter proxies, which deliver lower latency at a lower price.

Reputation, privacy and fair use

The appeal of residential IPs is that they carry the reputation of ordinary consumer connections rather than bulk server ranges. That authenticity is the foundation of their reliability for location-sensitive research.

Anonymity, however, is about behaviour as much as IP origin. Even on a genuine residential address, aggressive request rates put strain on a site, and a proxy does not change that site's rules or how it spots automated traffic. To use residential IPs fairly:

  • Pace requests at a reasonable rate that the site can comfortably handle.
  • Identify your client honestly rather than disguising it.
  • Use sticky sessions for flows that a real user would complete from one connection.

We operate a strict no-logs policy, so we do not retain records of the destinations you visit. Residential proxies improve the trustworthiness of your origin, but we never claim they guarantee evasion of any site's protections or bans. Always work within the terms of service of the sites you access and within applicable law.

Pricing and value at $3.98/GB

Residential proxies cost $3.98/GB, billed pay-as-you-go with a fixed 30-day validity and no contracts. You buy a data allowance, use it across as many IPs and locations as you need, and top up when you choose; there are no monthly commitments or hidden seat fees.

Here is how the tiers compare per gigabyte:

TypePrice/GBBest for
Datacenter$2.49High-volume, tolerant targets
Residential$3.98Geo-accurate, trust-sensitive work
Mobile$4.98Carrier-grade mobile origins
Residential premium$6.99The cleanest pool, quality-critical work

Costing more than datacenter but less than mobile, residential sits in the value sweet spot for most location-accurate tasks. Full details are on the pricing page.

Residential compared with other proxy types

Choosing the right tier is about matching the IP's origin to your task, not simply buying the most expensive option.

  • Versus datacenter — Datacenter proxies are faster and cheaper at $2.49/GB but resolve to hosting ranges, so reserve them for throughput-heavy work on tolerant endpoints. Residential wins wherever a real consumer origin matters.
  • Versus mobile — Mobile proxies at $4.98/GB present carrier IPs shared by many handsets, which is ideal for mobile-app contexts; residential is the better-value default for standard web research.
  • Versus premium residential — Residential premium at $6.99/GB draws from a more curated pool for the most demanding targets. Start with standard residential and step up only if you need it.

Many teams blend tiers: datacenter for bulk discovery, residential for geo-accurate verification, premium for the most quality-critical checks. Because all tiers share the same gateway model and billing, mixing them is straightforward.

Scaling residential proxies and best practices

Scaling a residential workload is about working with the network's strengths rather than hammering it. A few principles keep large jobs efficient and reliable.

  • Parallelise across IPs — distribute load over many rotating addresses instead of pushing volume through a few, which spreads activity naturally and improves success rates.
  • Match session style to the task — rotating for independent requests, sticky for stateful flows, so you never waste a fresh IP on a multi-step journey or pin a single IP for bulk gathering.
  • Cache and deduplicate — avoid re-fetching pages you already hold; since billing is per gigabyte, every avoided request saves money.
  • Target precisely — pin only the countries and cities you genuinely need so your data stays clean and relevant.
  • Monitor and back off — track error rates and slow gracefully when a target signals strain.

Combine these with sensible pacing and you can run substantial geo-accurate operations on a single pay-as-you-go allowance. Our 24/7 support can advise on tuning for your specific volume.

Common mistakes and troubleshooting

Most issues with residential proxies trace back to a handful of avoidable mistakes.

  • Wrong session type — using rotating IPs for a logged-in flow breaks continuity; switch to sticky sessions for anything multi-step.
  • Authentication failures — usually a mistyped port, malformed credential string, or an outbound IP that has not been whitelisted. Re-check the gateway details and your auth method.
  • Over-aggressive pacing — firing requests too fast strains the site even on genuine residential IPs; add delays and back off on errors.
  • Mismatched geo-targeting — forgetting to set the country parameter returns IPs from the default pool, skewing location-sensitive data. Verify with the my-IP tool.
  • Unbounded data use — downloading images, fonts and scripts you do not need inflates per-gigabyte cost; request only what you parse.

If a problem persists after these checks, capture the failing request and response codes and contact our 24/7 support; the FAQ also lists fixes for the most frequent client-specific quirks.

Security, compliance and responsible use

Residential proxies are a powerful tool, and using them responsibly protects both you and the network. Budget Proxies operates a strict no-logs policy and supports encrypted HTTPS connections so your traffic stays private in transit.

Responsible use means staying within clear boundaries:

  • Always comply with the terms of service of every site you access and with all applicable laws in your jurisdiction and the target's.
  • Use residential IPs for legitimate purposes such as ad verification, SEO monitoring, market and price research, and brand protection.
  • Do not attempt to collect personal data unlawfully or to circumvent security measures; we make no claim that our proxies guarantee bypassing bans, blocks or protections.
  • Authenticate securely, keep credentials private, and prefer IP whitelisting on fixed servers.

By keeping requests reasonable, geographically honest and clearly purposeful, you preserve the integrity of the residential pool for everyone and keep your own projects on a sound footing. If you are unsure whether a use case fits, our team is happy to advise.

Real-world residential proxy workflows

To see how the pieces fit together, here are three representative workflows on Budget Proxies residential IPs.

Ad verification across markets. A media team pins rotating residential IPs to each target country, loads campaign landing pages, and confirms that the correct creatives and geo-specific offers render to real local users. Rotation keeps each check independent and representative.

Localised SERP monitoring. An SEO analyst sets country and city parameters, then captures search results city by city to track genuine local rankings over time, feeding the data into a scraping pipeline that deduplicates and stores snapshots.

Price and catalogue intelligence. A retailer uses sticky sessions to browse a competitor's regional storefront as a single consistent shopper, navigating multi-step flows to read accurate, location-specific pricing.

Each example pairs the right session style with precise geo-targeting and disciplined pacing, the same recipe that makes residential proxies dependable for any location-accurate task.
