Black Friday, US spellings and sign-up limits: a US IP for everyday checks
Amazon.com, Walmart and Google can all show visitors inside the United States something different from what people elsewhere get, from delivery estimates to search results. A US proxy routes your traffic through a server there, so sites see an American IP address and give you that version. It won't give you a US bank card, a US address or permissions a site's rules don't already allow.
See the American version
Search results, shop banners and even spelling change for US visitors: think 'color', dollars and sizes in inches and pounds. If you write for American readers or sell to them, a US IP lets you see the page they actually get, rather than the version made for your own country.
Why the price changes at checkout
American shops usually list prices before sales tax, which is added at the end and depends on the state. Many also ask for a ZIP code, the US version of a postcode, before showing stock or delivery dates, so the IP alone won't settle what you can buy.
Clock and calendar basics
New York runs on Eastern Time and Los Angeles on Pacific Time, three hours apart. Dates are written month first, so 3/4 means March 4th. The US changes its clocks on different weekends from Europe, so for a few weeks a year the gap with London shrinks by an hour.
US sign-ups need US details
Bank accounts, phone plans and many US-only services ask for a Social Security number, a US card or a US address. A proxy doesn't supply any of those, and each site's terms still decide who may sign up, whatever IP address the site sees.
Simple first projects in the United States
Whatever you use it for, the law where you live and each website's terms still apply, and our acceptable use policy lists what we never allow.
The basics, in plain English
Websites read your IP address, your connection's number online, to work out where you are. A proxy lends you one of ours from the country you pick; your language settings, clock, card and delivery address stay as they are, and sites you sign in to still know it's you.
