Bulgarian sites from abroad: student moves, Sofia time and a phonetic keyboard
Cyrillic script and, since 2026, euro prices greet you on Bulgarian websites, though older pages still quote leva. A Bulgarian proxy, a server in Bulgaria that fetches pages for you, shows the versions people in Sofia or Plovdiv get, useful when you plan a move, compare prices or check a site you built. Flat contracts and phone plans need local paperwork whatever your IP, and each site's terms apply as usual.
Studying in Bulgaria
Bulgaria's medical universities in Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna run degree courses in English, so many students arrive from abroad. Before moving, many check flat adverts, phone plans and supermarket prices, and a Bulgarian IP shows those sites in the version people living there get.
Prices now in euros
Bulgaria swapped the lev for the euro on 1 January 2026. Older adverts, saved pages and receipts may still show лв., short for leva, and a lev figure looks roughly twice as big as the same amount in euros, so don't panic at old prices.
Checking your own project
Built a site or app for Bulgarian users? Open it through a Bulgarian IP to see whether Cyrillic letters display properly, whether translated buttons still fit and whether prices show the euro sign. It's a quick test before real customers find the problems.
Two hours ahead
Sofia is two hours ahead of London all year and an hour ahead of Berlin, on the same clock as Athens and Bucharest. Bulgarian shops' opening hours and sale deadlines follow Sofia time, so take two hours off when you plan from the UK.

The basics, in plain English
Websites read your IP address, your connection's number online, to work out where you are. A proxy lends you one of ours from the country you pick; your language settings, clock, card and delivery address stay as they are, and sites you sign in to still know it's you.
