A New Zealand IP, simply put: NZ dollars, working-holiday searches and a clock that runs ahead
New Zealand's web is mostly in English, yet it has its own marketplace in Trade Me, its own supermarket groups and te reo Māori words on many pages. A New Zealand proxy puts a Kiwi internet address in front of your browser, one of the signals local sites use to decide what to show you. People use one when planning a move or working holiday, or to check how their own website looks to Kiwi customers.
The classic use
Planning a working holiday is the classic case: you can browse Trade Me for cars and flatshares, check Pak'nSave grocery prices to set a budget, and read job adverts, all as they appear to people already there.
Kiwi English and te reo Māori
English is the everyday language online, and te reo Māori is an official language too, so you'll see words like kia ora (hello) and whānau (family), and dual place names such as Tāmaki Makaurau for Auckland. The lines over vowels are macrons, and they change how words are said.
A clock that runs ahead
Kiwi summer time runs from late September to early April, when clocks sit at UTC+13; the rest of the year it's UTC+12. That puts it well ahead of Europe: when it's evening in the UK, it's already the next morning in Auckland. Weekends are Saturday and Sunday.
Pick-up only, and other limits
Many Trade Me listings are pick-up only, so someone still has to collect in person. Shops decide for themselves whether to ship overseas, your bank handles any payment as usual, and each site's terms apply exactly as they would without a proxy.
Simple first projects in New Zealand
Whatever you use it for, the law where you live and each website's terms still apply, and our acceptable use policy lists what we never allow.
The basics, in plain English
Websites read your IP address, your connection's number online, to work out where you are. A proxy lends you one of ours from the country you pick; your language settings, clock, card and delivery address stay as they are, and sites you sign in to still know it's you.
