Wattpad and proxies: a gentle guide for readers and writers
In everyday words, a proxy is a borrowed internet address that Wattpad would see instead of yours. Most readers and writers never need one: Wattpad works on the web and in its app over an ordinary connection. A proxy is mainly useful for checking how a story link behaves for readers in another country. It won't open paid chapters, and it isn't a way round rules set by your school, employer or country.
Blocked at school or work?
If Wattpad is blocked on a school or office network, that's the network owner's rule, and using a proxy to get round it can break their acceptable-use policy. Read at home or on your own mobile data instead.
Countries that block Wattpad
Some governments and courts have blocked Wattpad, including a court order in Turkey in 2024. A block like that is a legal matter, not a technical glitch, so read up on the local rules rather than assuming a proxy makes access fine.
Which type, and where it goes
Residential is the type to choose; its addresses come from household internet providers, like a reader's at home. Wattpad's app doesn't ask about proxies, so the tidy option is a spare browser kept for link checks, rather than changing your phone's Wi-Fi settings.
Promote without spamming
Wattpad's community standards count unwanted bulk messages or comments as spam, so don't paste your story link across other people's comment sections. Reads or votes from extra accounts would mislead the editors and readers you most want to impress, and a proxy changes none of that.
Quick start in three steps
Nothing to install. This is the whole route, from paying to the first page you load through the proxy.
Buy a small Residential plan
Choose a small bundle, or just the GB (gigabytes of data) you need, and pay. Then, under My Plans → Proxy Configuration in your dashboard, set the country, the protocol, and sticky (one address that stays put) or rotating (a new one each time).
Add it to a browser or your phone
On a computer, one browser is the simplest place for it. Phone apps rarely have a proxy box of their own, so on a phone the setting lives in your Wi-Fi network's options; where an app does have one, use the app's.
Check that it worked
With the proxy switched on, open our IP checker: it should show the proxy's address, not your own. The IP location lookup then tells you which country that address is in, and if anything looks wrong, the quick fixes further down cover the usual slips. About to log in somewhere? Switch to a sticky session first, so the address stays put.
Our pick for Wattpad: Residential
Wattpad readers are mostly people at home or on their phones, so a residential proxy, which hands you an address from someone's home internet service, fits in naturally. Server addresses from the datacenter type are likelier to meet spam checks when someone signs up or posts. For most readers and writers, though, a proxy is optional: its useful jobs are keeping your address from the site and checking how a story appears elsewhere.
Easier signup verification
New accounts sometimes get an extra check, such as confirming your email address. Signing up on your normal connection is the straightforward way; a residential address won't hurt, but it won't help a genuine signup either. Use an email you can actually open, because you'll need it.
One IP per author profile
Many writers use a pen name, which is simply the author name on your profile; it doesn't need a second account or a second address. If you do keep more than one account, check Wattpad's rules first and keep each one's activity genuine.
Region-available story access
Some paid stories are offered only in certain countries, because rights can be sold country by country. A proxy can show you what's listed for readers elsewhere. It doesn't buy coins or open paid chapters for you, since payment and access are tied to your account.
Public catalogue research
Curious which tags and genres are popular? Browse tag pages and reading lists by hand and note what keeps turning up. Copying story pages in bulk with software is a different matter: Wattpad's terms decide what's allowed, and the stories belong to their authors.
What a proxy won't do here
It can't hide who you are once you sign in, because your account tells the service exactly that. Nor can it make breaking a platform's rules any safer.
What people use it for
- ▸Finding which stories other countries get
- ▸Previewing your story page as a stranger
- ▸Browsing tags and genres for ideas
- ▸Reading with your home IP kept private
Which proxy type should I pick for Wattpad?
Residential is the sensible starting point here. Datacenter costs less when a site accepts server addresses; mobile and premium earn their higher price only in the cases described below.
| Type | Choose it when… | From, per GB |
|---|---|---|
| Datacenter | Cost matters most and the site is happy with addresses from server companies. Good for public pages and first experiments. | $2.49 |
| Residential Our pick for Wattpad | A site turns server addresses away, or you want to see it the way a local visitor does. The address belongs to a home broadband line. | $3.98 |
| Mobile 4G/5G | The service is built around phones, or you want to see it as someone on 4G or 5G would. The address comes from a phone network. | $4.98 |
| Residential Premium | Standard residential keeps being refused on one particular site. Hand-picked home addresses, at a higher price per GB. | $6.99 |
Choosing a country: For your own accounts, the country you actually live in is the safe choice; another country only makes sense for looking around signed out. There are 55+ countries, and in major markets some types let you pick a city too. Browse locations
For the longer version, our proxy comparison walks through all four types.
What you need, and where it goes on a phone or computer
Wherever you set it up, you type in the same four details from your dashboard: the host (the proxy's address), the port (a number that tells the connection which door to use), a username and a password.
In one browser
Firefox has its own proxy settings, so only Firefox uses the proxy. On Windows and Mac, Chrome and Edge follow the computer's settings instead.
Setting it up somewhere else? Step-by-step guides:
Two ways to log in to the proxy
- ▸Username and password. The
host:port:user:passdetails that browsers, apps and scripts ask for. - ▸IP whitelist. Add your own IP address to the list in your dashboard and connections from it need no password. Handy where there's nowhere to type one, such as Android's Wi-Fi proxy screen.
Which protocol?
A protocol is the language your device uses to talk to the proxy. Every proxy works over HTTP, HTTPS and SOCKS5; if an app asks for SOCKS5 by name, give it SOCKS5 details, and put HTTP details in an HTTP box.
Common slip-ups, and the quick fix for each
When something feels off on a first try, it's often one of these.
Logging in on a rotating address
Rotating means a new address for every request; sticky means one address kept for 1-30 minutes. Use sticky for anything you sign in to, or the site may log you out halfway through.
A slip in the proxy details
One wrong character in the host, port, username or password and nothing connects. Copy them again from your dashboard and try them in our proxy checker. Using the IP whitelist? Home IP addresses change now and then, so check yours with the IP checker and update the list.
Signing in from a new country every day
A sudden change of location is a common trigger for "is this really you?" checks. Sign in from one steady place: your usual connection, or a sticky address in the country you live in.
Pages load slowly
Home connections vary in speed. Pick a proxy country nearer to you and try again before changing anything else.
Proxy not working when it arrives? Tell us within 24 hours of delivery and we'll swap it, or refund that part of the order if we can't (see the refund policy). Support answers 24/7 through the contact page.
Is a proxy for Wattpad allowed?
Using a proxy is legal in most countries (a few restrict them), so the question is what you do through it: stick to public information and your own accounts, at a sensible pace, within the service's terms and the law where you live.
Social and chat apps expect accounts to belong to real people who use them the way the platform intends. Fake profiles, bought followers and automated likes or follows break those rules, whatever address they come from.
If personal data is involved, data-protection law applies as well, and no proxy can protect an account from a platform's own decisions.
Keeping the cost down
You pay for data by the GB, never for time, so set the proxy in the one browser or app that needs it and switch it off when you're done.
Start with a small order
Buy a little Residential data first, at $3.98 per GB, and try it where you need it. Top up once it works.
Use it within 30 days
Each order runs for 30 days from payment, and GB you haven't used don't carry over, so buy for the weeks ahead rather than the year.
Match the type to the site
Leave easy sites on datacenter and send only the stubborn ones through residential, mobile or premium. Mixing types keeps the bill small.
