Using WeChat with a proxy: a calm guide for beginners

Plainly put, a proxy is a relay that your WeChat traffic passes through before it reaches Tencent's servers. Most people don't need one: WeChat works abroad and inside China, and which set of rules covers your account depends on the phone number you registered with, not on your location. Where people do meet proxies with WeChat, it's often at work, on an office network that requires one.

The computer app needs your phone

WeChat for Windows and Mac signs you in when you scan a QR code with the phone app, so your phone must be online and logged in first. If the QR code never appears on the computer, the computer's proxy setting is the first thing to check.

Which type, if you need one

For a phone, mobile 4G/5G is closest to how WeChat normally connects. On a work computer, use whatever your office network requires. Residential works for occasional use and costs less per GB than mobile.

Habits to avoid

Never scan a stranger's QR code to help them register; you'd be vouching for an account you know nothing about. Don't buy, sell or rent WeChat accounts either, and don't install add-ons that promise to automate your chats.

Simple fixes

If messages hang on sending, turn the proxy off for a minute: if they go through, the proxy is the cause and its details need rechecking. On a phone, a Wi-Fi proxy only applies on that Wi-Fi network, so WeChat on mobile data ignores it.

Quick start in three steps

Nothing to install. This is the whole route, from paying to the first page you load through the proxy.

1

Buy a small Mobile 4G/5G plan

The mobile order form asks for a country, a protocol and a login method before you pay for your GB (gigabytes of data). Once payment clears, the details are waiting in your dashboard.

2

Add it to a browser or your phone

On a computer, one browser is the simplest place for it. Phone apps rarely have a proxy box of their own, so on a phone the setting lives in your Wi-Fi network's options; where an app does have one, use the app's.

3

Check that it worked

With the proxy switched on, open our IP checker: it should show the proxy's address, not your own. The IP location lookup then tells you which country that address is in, and if anything looks wrong, the quick fixes further down cover the usual slips. Mobile addresses refresh by themselves from time to time, so finish a login or a checkout in one go.

Our pick for WeChat: Mobile 4G/5G

WeChat is built around your phone: the account is tied to your phone number, and the desktop app signs in through the phone app. Mobile proxies borrow addresses from mobile phone networks, the same kind of connection WeChat sees from a handset on 4G or 5G, so they're the type we'd match to it. Plenty of people never need one, so read the points below before you spend anything.

✓

Carrier-grade standing

'Carrier-grade' just means the address comes from a mobile network rather than home broadband or a server company. That's the ordinary profile of a phone using WeChat on mobile data. It doesn't add trust to an account: WeChat judges accounts by the phone number behind them and how they're used.

✓

Region-matched addresses

If you use a proxy, set it to the country of your WeChat phone number, so your connection and your account tell the same story. Hopping between countries can bring extra sign-in checks, such as a code sent to your phone by text.

✓

One IP across the session

Choose sticky rather than rotating: sticky holds one address for a stretch, while rotating moves you to a new one every so often. Messaging apps keep a connection open in the background, and a changing address can leave messages stuck or make the app reconnect again and again.

✓

Ready for emulators and tooling

An emulator is a program that runs a phone's system on a computer. It can be handy for testing a mini program you've built, and our proxies work inside one like in any other app. Using emulators or scripts to run batches of accounts is another matter: WeChat's rules are strict about it, and we won't help with it.

What a proxy won't do here

It can't hide who you are once you sign in, because your account tells the service exactly that. Nor can it make breaking a platform's rules any safer.

What people use it for

  • ▸Testing a mini program over mobile data
  • ▸Opening your public articles from abroad
  • ▸Fewer reconnects with a sticky session
  • ▸Checking WeChat links load in a market

Which proxy type should I pick for WeChat?

Mobile is our suggestion because phone-network addresses suit services that were built for phones. If you only look around signed out, residential costs less and often does the job.

Type Choose it when… From, per GB
Datacenter Cost matters most and the site is happy with addresses from server companies. Good for public pages and first experiments. $2.49
Residential A site turns server addresses away, or you want to see it the way a local visitor does. The address belongs to a home broadband line. $3.98
Mobile 4G/5G Our pick for WeChat The service is built around phones, or you want to see it as someone on 4G or 5G would. The address comes from a phone network. $4.98
Residential Premium Standard residential keeps being refused on one particular site. Hand-picked home addresses, at a higher price per GB. $6.99

Choosing a country: For your own accounts, the country you actually live in is the safe choice; another country only makes sense for looking around signed out. There are 55+ countries, and in major markets some types let you pick a city too. Browse locations

For the longer version, our proxy comparison walks through all four types.

What you need, and where it goes on a phone or computer

Wherever you set it up, you type in the same four details from your dashboard: the host (the proxy's address), the port (a number that tells the connection which door to use), a username and a password.

Usual place for this

On your phone or computer

iPhones and Android phones keep a proxy setting inside each Wi-Fi network, so it applies on that network only. A computer's system setting covers every app that follows it.

Step-by-step: iPhone · Android · Windows · Mac

Setting it up somewhere else? Step-by-step guides:

In one browser: Chrome · Firefox · Edge

Inside an app, tool or script: Python · cURL

Two ways to log in to the proxy

  • ▸Username and password. The host:port:user:pass details that browsers, apps and scripts ask for.
  • ▸IP whitelist. Add your own IP address to the list in your dashboard and connections from it need no password. Handy where there's nowhere to type one, such as Android's Wi-Fi proxy screen.

Which protocol?

A protocol is the language your device uses to talk to the proxy. Every proxy works over HTTP, HTTPS and SOCKS5; if an app asks for SOCKS5 by name, give it SOCKS5 details, and put HTTP details in an HTTP box.

Common slip-ups, and the quick fix for each

When something feels off on a first try, it's often one of these.

Logging in on a rotating address

Rotating means a new address for every request; sticky means one address kept for 1-30 minutes. Use sticky for anything you sign in to, or the site may log you out halfway through.

A slip in the proxy details

One wrong character in the host, port, username or password and nothing connects. Copy them again from your dashboard and try them in our proxy checker. Using the IP whitelist? Home IP addresses change now and then, so check yours with the IP checker and update the list.

Signing in from a new country every day

A sudden change of location is a common trigger for "is this really you?" checks. Sign in from one steady place: your usual connection, or a sticky address in the country you live in.

The address changed mid-task

Phone networks refresh their addresses now and then. Ask for a fresh one in the dashboard, and finish logins and checkouts in one sitting.

Proxy not working when it arrives? Tell us within 24 hours of delivery and we'll swap it, or refund that part of the order if we can't (see the refund policy). Support answers 24/7 through the contact page.

Is a proxy for WeChat allowed?

Using a proxy is legal in most countries (a few restrict them), so the question is what you do through it: stick to public information and your own accounts, at a sensible pace, within the service's terms and the law where you live.

Social and chat apps expect accounts to belong to real people who use them the way the platform intends. Fake profiles, bought followers and automated likes or follows break those rules, whatever address they come from.

If personal data is involved, data-protection law applies as well, and no proxy can protect an account from a platform's own decisions.

Keeping the cost down

You pay for data by the GB, never for time, so set the proxy in the one browser or app that needs it and switch it off when you're done.

Start with a small order

Buy a little Mobile 4G/5G data first, at $4.98 per GB, and try it where you need it. Top up once it works.

Use it within 30 days

Each order runs for 30 days from payment, and GB you haven't used don't carry over, so buy for the weeks ahead rather than the year.

Match the type to the site

Leave easy sites on datacenter and send only the stubborn ones through residential, mobile or premium. Mixing types keeps the bill small.

Questions beginners ask about WeChat

No. WeChat is made by a Chinese company, Tencent, and works there on local mobile data or hotel Wi-Fi. Make sure you can receive texts on your number in case WeChat asks you to verify a login, and keep the app updated before you travel.
If you use IP whitelisting instead of a password, your home IP may have changed since you set it up, so check that first. Then test the same proxy in a browser: if pages load there but WeChat still can't connect, the app isn't getting on with that proxy, so switch it off for WeChat.
Look in WeChat's own settings first: some desktop versions offer a network proxy option on the sign-in screen. If yours doesn't, set the proxy in your computer's network settings instead, and test it in a browser before opening WeChat.
That's not how WeChat works. Registration rests on a phone number that can receive texts, and some new accounts also need a security check from an existing user. Your internet address decides none of it, so a proxy adds nothing.
WeChat's rules are mostly about behaviour: spam, buying or renting accounts, unofficial add-ons and mass messaging. A proxy doesn't make any of those acceptable, so stick to WeChat's terms whatever connection you're on.
No. Voice and video calls want a quick, steady connection, and routing them through a proxy adds a detour. If you already have one switched on, turn it off and test again on your normal Wi-Fi or mobile data.
