Surnames first, price comparisons and a language of its own: browsing Hungary from abroad
Hungary has its own price comparison site, Árukereső, its own classifieds and its own currency, the forint. Your IP address works like a return address on everything you send online, and a Hungarian one lets you see those sites as a shopper in Budapest would. Hungarian itself can look baffling at first, so a few language tips come along the way.
Compare prices and listings
Árukereső.hu compares prices across Hungarian shops, and Jófogás is a Hungarian site for second-hand ads. Both show prices in forints (Ft), and browsing them through a Hungarian IP helps if you're heading to university in Debrecen or Szeged and want a feel for what a used desk costs.
Spot-check what you built
A Hungarian IP is a useful way to see your own site or app as local users do. Check that ő and ű display properly, since they are separate letters from ö and ü, and that address forms accept a four-digit postcode before the town name, the usual Hungarian order.
A language of its own
Hungarian belongs to a different language family from German, Slovak or Romanian, so even short words look unfamiliar at first. Budapest keeps Central European Time, so when it's noon there, it's already 1pm across the border in Romania.
The IP isn't a pass
Cash on delivery is a common choice at Hungarian checkouts, but it still needs a real Hungarian address and someone there to pay the courier. Changing your IP can't provide either, and each shop's own terms apply to you as normal.
Simple first projects in Hungary
Whatever you use it for, the law where you live and each website's terms still apply, and our acceptable use policy lists what we never allow.
The basics, in plain English
Websites read your IP address, your connection's number online, to work out where you are. A proxy lends you one of ours from the country you pick; your language settings, clock, card and delivery address stay as they are, and sites you sign in to still know it's you.
