Browsing with a Russian IP when Instagram is blocked and foreign cards don't work
Yandex answers in Russian, shops price in roubles and local listings match what people in Moscow browse when your IP address, the address your connection shows to websites, is in Russia. That suits Russian speakers abroad and language learners, but it also means you inherit Russia's internet rules, including its blocks on several big Western services.
Sensible uses
Seeing Yandex search results the way people in Moscow or Saint Petersburg do, checking how your own website looks to a Russian visitor, or practising the language on real Russian pages. Yandex tailors results to your city, so pick the city you care about.
Sites you still can't open
Russia blocked Instagram and Facebook in 2022 and has restricted other Western services since. A Russian IP runs into those same blocks, which makes it the wrong tool for reaching them.
Moscow time and Cyrillic
Moscow keeps UTC+3 all year with no clock changes, but Russia is wide: Novosibirsk is four hours ahead of Moscow. Russian uses the Cyrillic alphabet, and the built-in translation in most browsers handles it.
Rules before you pay
Sanctions in the EU, UK, US and other countries restrict many dealings with Russian companies, so check what applies where you live before buying anything, even a small online order. Russian law and each site's terms bind you too, on any connection.
Simple first projects in Russia
Whatever you use it for, the law where you live and each website's terms still apply, and our acceptable use policy lists what we never allow.
The basics, in plain English
Websites read your IP address, your connection's number online, to work out where you are. A proxy lends you one of ours from the country you pick; your language settings, clock, card and delivery address stay as they are, and sites you sign in to still know it's you.
