Swiss IP addresses in plain English: francs, train tickets and life outside the EU
Switzerland has its own currency, four national languages and prices that often surprise visitors. A Swiss proxy lets you see Swiss websites as people there do: prices in francs, Swiss delivery options and usually a choice of German, French or Italian. Typical users are people preparing a move and shop owners checking what Swiss customers see. It can't make you a Swiss resident in the eyes of a bank, an insurer or a website's terms.
A new job or a new market
Newcomers starting a job in Zurich, Geneva or Basel often check Migros and Coop online prices to budget for food, or look at the Swiss versions of international shops in francs. Others check that their own online shop shows francs, not euros, to Swiss visitors.
Which language you'll see
It depends on the region a site serves. Most of Switzerland's north and centre uses German, the west uses French and Ticino, south of the Alps, uses Italian. Many Swiss sites have DE, FR and IT buttons; people speak Swiss German dialects, but websites mostly use standard written German.
Train tickets don't need one
SBB sells tickets online to anyone, wherever you are. Supersaver tickets cost less but only cover the train you booked, and the Half Fare travelcard halves most fares while it's valid, so compare those options rather than worrying about your location.
Outside the EU
Switzerland isn't in the EU, even though it changes to summer time on the same dates. Parcels from abroad can face customs charges, and EU roam-like-at-home rules don't automatically cover Swiss mobile use, so check your phone plan before you travel.
Simple first projects in Switzerland
Whatever you use it for, the law where you live and each website's terms still apply, and our acceptable use policy lists what we never allow.
The basics, in plain English
Websites read your IP address, your connection's number online, to work out where you are. A proxy lends you one of ours from the country you pick; your language settings, clock, card and delivery address stay as they are, and sites you sign in to still know it's you.
