Do you even need a Greek IP? Skroutz, Greeklish links and EU shopping rules
Inside the EU, many people don't need a Greek IP at all, because shops generally have to let you buy from whichever member country you're in. Where one earns its keep is on sites that change prices or pages for people browsing from Greece: they read your IP address, the return address your connection puts on every request, and answer a Greek one with Greek pages in the Greek alphabet, priced in euros.
When a Greek IP helps
Seeing Skroutz price comparisons as shoppers in Greece see them, checking how a holiday rental listing displays for local visitors, or testing your small online shop's Greek page before you start selling there.
Reading Greek
Greek is written in its own alphabet, the one that gives us alpha, beta and omega, so pages look unfamiliar at first, though many tourism sites have an English version and a right-click translate does the rest.
Time difference
Athens runs on Eastern European Time, moving its clocks forward an hour each spring on the same dates as the rest of the EU. So whatever the season, Athens is an hour ahead of Paris and Berlin.
Streaming and site terms
If you live in Greece and pay for a Greek streaming service, EU portability rules let you keep watching on trips to other EU countries, no proxy needed. Outside the EU, the service's licence decides what plays, and every website's terms stay the same whatever your IP says.
Simple first projects in Greece
Whatever you use it for, the law where you live and each website's terms still apply, and our acceptable use policy lists what we never allow.
The basics, in plain English
Websites read your IP address, your connection's number online, to work out where you are. A proxy lends you one of ours from the country you pick; your language settings, clock, card and delivery address stay as they are, and sites you sign in to still know it's you.
