Puentes, IVA incluido and Bogotá time: Colombia made simple
Prices in pesos with sales tax included, an online sale called Hot Sale and long weekends that slow deliveries are the first local habits you'll meet on Colombian websites. A Colombian IP address, the label your connection carries online, loads those pages the way they appear in Bogotá or Medellín, handy for comparing prices or seeing how an app greets Colombian users.
Hot Sale, the online sale
Hot Sale is the online sale run by Colombia's e-commerce chamber, which announces the dates on its own website. A Colombian IP shows you the local deal pages, but checkout still expects an address in Colombia and a card or wallet the store takes.
Long weekends called puentes
Many Colombian public holidays move to the following Monday, creating long weekends that locals call puentes. Online shops keep selling, but deliveries and customer service often slow down, so allow an extra day if you're tracking an order or waiting for a reply.
No clock changes
Colombia doesn't change its clocks; it sits five hours behind UTC, the baseline that world time zones are measured from. In the northern winter that matches New York; when the US moves its clocks forward in March, Bogotá falls an hour behind New York until November.
Words you'll see
Colombian shops say 'domicilio' for home delivery and 'envío gratis' for free shipping, and prices often note 'IVA incluido', meaning sales tax is included. A browser's translate button helps, but knowing these words makes local pages quicker to read.

The basics, in plain English
Websites read your IP address, your connection's number online, to work out where you are. A proxy lends you one of ours from the country you pick; your language settings, clock, card and delivery address stay as they are, and sites you sign in to still know it's you.
