New to Peruvian IPs? Soles, Yape and Lima time explained
Many Peruvians pay each other and local shops through Yape or Plin, phone apps tied to Peruvian bank accounts. A Peruvian IP address, which sites use to decide which version of a page to show, lets you see what someone in Lima or Arequipa sees: prices in soles, Cyber Wow offers and the Peruvian edition of an app. Paying is another matter, since those apps need a Peruvian account whatever your IP.
Soles, written S/
Peru's currency is the sol, shown as S/ before the amount, and most shops write prices with a decimal point, as in English. If a price looks oddly large or small, check whether a comma is being used instead, as some pages do.
Cyber Wow sales
Cyber Wow is an online sale lasting a few days, organised by IAB Perú, an advertising industry group, and it returns more than once a year. Many of its prices apply only when you pay with a particular store or bank card, so read the small print before comparing.
Lima time, all year
Peru doesn't change its clocks, so Lima stays five hours behind UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), the same as Bogotá. Sales and live events in Peru are announced in Lima time, so convert before you set a reminder.
Languages and local rules
Spanish is the main language online, while Quechua and Aymara are also official in the areas where they're widely spoken. Whatever language a page uses, the site's own conditions and the law that applies to you stay the same as without a proxy.
Simple first projects in Peru
Whatever you use it for, the law where you live and each website's terms still apply, and our acceptable use policy lists what we never allow.
The basics, in plain English
Websites read your IP address, your connection's number online, to work out where you are. A proxy lends you one of ours from the country you pick; your language settings, clock, card and delivery address stay as they are, and sites you sign in to still know it's you.
