Datacenter vs Residential Proxies: Which Should a Beginner Buy?
The short answer: start with datacenter, and switch to residential only for the websites that need it. Datacenter proxies run on servers in data centres, so they're very fast and easy on a small budget. Residential proxies send your traffic through real home connections, so websites treat them like ordinary visitors, but each gigabyte costs more. Choosing between them is a trade: speed and price on one side, trust and success rate on the other.
Try this in three steps:
- Buy a little datacenter and test it on the sites you care about.
- Make a note of any site where pages fail to load or keep getting refused.
- Move only those sites to residential, and leave everything else on datacenter.
Whichever you use, keep to legitimate work that respects each website's terms of service.

The two types in plain words
Datacenter proxies
Datacenter proxies use IP addresses owned by hosting and cloud companies. They run on fast connections (up to 1 Gbps), start at just $2.49/GB, and are ideal for collecting lots of public information from sites without heavy bot protection. Their weak spot is that their network ID, the ASN, shows they're servers, so sites with strict fraud checks may treat them with more suspicion.
Residential proxies
Residential proxies use addresses that home internet providers give to real households. Because they look like everyday home users, protected sites trust them more, and they're the usual choice for ad verification, market research and testing what a real location sees. They're slower and start at $3.98/GB. Completely new to them? Read what are residential proxies first.
Datacenter and residential side by side
These are the differences that matter most for a small project. The prices are our pay-as-you-go starting rates.
| Factor | Datacenter | Residential |
|---|---|---|
| Where the IP comes from | Cloud and hosting companies | Real home internet connections |
| Welcome on protected sites | Lower | High |
| Speed | Quick (up to 1 Gbps) | Medium |
| Starting price | $2.49/GB | $3.98/GB |
| Location choice | Country | Country, or a city in the big markets |
| Good for | Lots of public pages, automation and SEO tools | Ad checks, market research and local results |
A simple rule for choosing
- Choose datacenter when the site has little or no bot protection, when keeping the cost per page down matters most, or when you need lots of speed and many requests at once (copying data from a public API or pulling in news feeds, for instance). See which proxy suits a scraping project.
- Choose residential when the site's bot protection is wary of server addresses, when your results must match what a real local person sees, or for ad verification and SEO checks.
- Step up to Residential Premium or mobile for the toughest sites, or for apps built mainly for phones.
Mixing the two is normal and sensible. Running most of your work on datacenter and only the stubborn sites on residential keeps your average cost low without losing results where they count.
What you'll actually spend
Both types are billed by the gigabyte, so the number that really matters is how much data your task uses, not only the price per GB. Fetching plain text pages uses very little. Loading full pages with all their images in a headless browser (a browser controlled by a script, with no window on screen) uses far more. Try both on the proxy calculator, compare every type on the pricing page, and when you're ready you can buy either type with instant delivery.
Three mistakes that waste money
- Buying residential "to be safe" for a site that never checks its visitors, where datacenter would have done the same job for less.
- Forgetting to set the location. Residential is often bought to see one country or city, so choose that place in your settings, or the results won't tell you much.
- Looking only at the price per GB. Two jobs at the same rate can cost very different amounts if one loads full pages and the other fetches text, so estimate your data first.
