A Kenyan IP in simple terms: shilling prices, Swahili basics and what stays tied to your SIM

Kenyan shop sites price in shillings, mostly in English with the odd Swahili word, and run on a clock three hours ahead of UTC all year. A Kenyan proxy lends your browsing a Kenyan address, so you can check shilling prices, read Kenyan news as locals see it or test your own site for Kenyan visitors. Anything tied to your SIM card, ID or bank stays exactly where it was.

Reasons people give

If you're a Kenyan abroad, you can see what Naivas or Jumia charge before sending money for shopping. If you've built an app or website for Kenyan users, you can test it through a Kenyan address before launch. If you sell online, you can check which adverts Kenyan visitors see.

Swahili and English

Kenya has two official languages, English and Swahili, and most shopping sites use English. Swahili words still pop up: karibu means welcome and bei means price. Young Nairobi shoppers also use Sheng, a slang mixing Swahili and English, which translation tools may miss.

Nairobi time

Kenya stays on East Africa Time, UTC+3, all year. On a winter morning, 9am in London is already noon in Nairobi; in the British summer the gap drops to two hours. Offices work Monday to Friday, and many shops open on Saturdays too.

What it leaves alone

Payments still come from your own card and bank, Kenyan shops still deliver only to addresses they cover, and websites' rules don't loosen because your address looks local. It's for looking and testing, not for buying as a resident.

Whatever you use it for, the law where you live and each website's terms still apply, and our acceptable use policy lists what we never allow.

The basics, in plain English

Websites read your IP address, your connection's number online, to work out where you are. A proxy lends you one of ours from the country you pick; your language settings, clock, card and delivery address stay as they are, and sites you sign in to still know it's you.

  1. Choose a type and a small package below.
  2. Copy your login details from the dashboard into your browser, phone or app. HTTP, HTTPS and SOCKS5 all work.
  3. Open our My IP tool to check the location websites now see.

Kenya proxies: first-timer questions

No. Kenya's national parks charge different entry fees for citizens, residents and visitors, and the cheaper rates need a Kenyan ID or residence permit shown when you book or arrive. Lodges and tour firms with resident offers check documents too. Booking a resident rate without them can mean paying the difference on the day.
Because many Kenyan checkouts send an M-Pesa payment prompt straight to the buyer's phone, where the PIN is entered. That only works with a registered Safaricom M-Pesa line, so a foreign number won't receive it, whatever your IP. Choose card payment if the shop offers it, or ask a relative in Kenya to pay.
Start small: packages begin at 1 GB, and each order lasts 30 days, used or not. Text pages use far less data than video or downloads.
Tell us within 24 hours of delivery. We'll swap it for one that works or, if we can't, refund that part of the order. Used data can't be refunded.
