A Nigerian IP without the jargon: naira prices, Lagos time and honest limits
Prices in naira have risen quickly since 2023, so what a relative quoted for a phone last month may already be out of date. A Nigerian proxy routes your browsing through Nigeria, so Jumia, Konga and local news sites show what people in Lagos or Abuja see. It's a viewing tool: it won't deliver, pay or sign you up anywhere.
Good reasons to want one
Price checks: see what a phone or generator costs on Jumia before sending money home. Your own shop: confirm it shows naira and delivery details to Nigerian visitors. News and culture: follow Nigerian sites as local readers see them, adverts included.
Languages you'll come across
English is the official language and most websites use it. You'll also meet Nigerian Pidgin, Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo; BBC News, for example, publishes in all four. Words like 'oga' (boss) or 'abeg' (please) turn up in adverts and comments, and a quick search explains them.
Lagos time
Lagos is one hour ahead of UTC all year. If you're in the UK, that means no difference in summer and one hour in winter; from New York it's five or six hours, depending on US daylight saving. Weekdays are Monday to Friday.
Delivery, USSD codes and your SIM
Jumia and Konga deliver to addresses in Nigeria, and pay-on-delivery means paying in person. USSD banking codes, the short numbers you dial, depend on your Nigerian SIM card and bank account, not on your IP. Each website's terms still apply, wherever your connection appears to be.
Simple first projects in Nigeria
Whatever you use it for, the law where you live and each website's terms still apply, and our acceptable use policy lists what we never allow.
The basics, in plain English
Websites read your IP address, your connection's number online, to work out where you are. A proxy lends you one of ours from the country you pick; your language settings, clock, card and delivery address stay as they are, and sites you sign in to still know it's you.
