What a South African IP can and can't do for rand prices and local specials
Say you live in London but grew up in Pretoria. A South African proxy routes your browsing through a South African address, so local sites show you roughly what people there see: rand prices, local specials and South African search results. It is handy for checking prices before sending a gift home. It can't deliver anything, pay for anything or change a site's rules for you.
Who uses one, and why
Expats compare Takealot or Makro prices before ordering a gift for delivery to family. Someone planning a move browses Gumtree to see what a used car costs in Cape Town. A small online seller checks that their shop shows rand to Johannesburg buyers.
Words you'll meet on South African sites
Most shopping sites are in English, though South Africa has many official languages, including Afrikaans and isiZulu. Shops call their discounts specials, prices start with R for rand, and you may spot local words such as braai, meaning a barbecue, in product names.
Clock basics
The whole country uses one time zone, UTC+2, with no clock change in summer. In a British winter that puts Johannesburg two hours ahead of London; in a British summer the gap shrinks to one hour. The weekend is Saturday and Sunday.
What a proxy won't do
It won't let you pay like a local. Instant EFT, a common South African checkout option, takes money straight from a South African bank account, so it needs one. Your app store country won't change either, because that follows your account rather than your IP.
Simple first projects in South Africa
Whatever you use it for, the law where you live and each website's terms still apply, and our acceptable use policy lists what we never allow.
The basics, in plain English
Websites read your IP address, your connection's number online, to work out where you are. A proxy lends you one of ours from the country you pick; your language settings, clock, card and delivery address stay as they are, and sites you sign in to still know it's you.
