Proxy for Fortnite: a beginner's guide

Fortnite already lets you pick a matchmaking region in its settings. A proxy adds privacy and store browsing, never easier lobbies. Here's the plain version.

Fortnite lag and proxies: a starter guide for players

A proxy, in simple words, is a middleman address your connection passes through. In Fortnite it doesn't choose your servers; you do that yourself under Matchmaking Region in the game's settings, where each region shows its ping. A proxy can't shorten the trip to Epic's servers and often lengthens it, so most players are better off without one.

Setting your region by hand

Open Settings, find Matchmaking Region and choose the region with the lowest ping, the delay in milliseconds between you and the servers. Playing with friends abroad means agreeing on one region, and someone ends up with higher ping; no proxy changes that.

Protect your Epic account

Turn on two-factor authentication, which asks for a code from an app or email when you sign in; Epic requires it for some features, such as gifting. It protects your skins and V-Bucks far better than any proxy could.

Cheats, sellers and scams

Cheats and aim tools are what Fortnite's anti-cheat systems exist to catch, and they lead to bans. Buying accounts or cut-price V-Bucks from websites risks losing them, and 'free V-Bucks' sites are scams that collect passwords.

If you set one up anyway

On PC, put a proxy for browsing the Epic Games Store in your browser, and keep the launcher and game on your normal connection. Datacenter, the low-cost type built on server-company addresses, is usually enough there. Phones and some consoles offer a proxy option, but games tend to ignore it.

Quick start in three steps

Nothing to install. This is the whole route, from paying to the first page you load through the proxy.

1

Buy a small Residential plan

Choose a small bundle, or just the GB (gigabytes of data) you need, and pay. Then, under My Plans → Proxy Configuration in your dashboard, set the country, the protocol, and sticky (one address that stays put) or rotating (a new one each time).

2

Add it to one browser

Use the proxy in one browser for the game's website, forums or shop. The game and its launcher can keep their normal connection, which is usually quicker.

3

Check that it worked

With the proxy switched on, open our IP checker: it should show the proxy's address, not your own. The IP location lookup then tells you which country that address is in, and if anything looks wrong, the quick fixes further down cover the usual slips. About to log in somewhere? Switch to a sticky session first, so the address stays put.

Our pick for Fortnite: Residential

If you sign in to Epic on hotel Wi-Fi, or want to see the store as it looks back home while you're away, residential is a sensible, private choice; its addresses are handed out to households by internet providers. For the matches themselves, Fortnite's own region setting does more than any proxy can.

✓

Region-accurate matchmaking

Fortnite lets you choose your matchmaking region in its game settings and shows your ping for each one. That's the official way to play on a region's servers. A proxy isn't needed for it and usually just adds delay.

✓

A clean residential footprint

Websites treat a residential address like any home connection, which is handy for signing in privately away from home. It changes nothing about how Epic's anti-cheat judges what you do in a match, and nothing about the rules you play under.

✓

Sticky sessions for matches

If you play through a proxy at all, make it sticky, so the address doesn't change partway through a match; a change can drop you. Most players will find the direct connection steadier anyway.

✓

Epic Games Store access

Store prices and offers follow your Epic account's country rather than your connection. A proxy lets you browse store pages privately, but buy only in your own account's region; shopping as if you lived elsewhere can break Epic's terms.

What a proxy won't do here

It won't lower your ping, the delay between you and the game server. And it won't make bots, extra accounts or account sharing acceptable to a game that forbids them.

What people use it for

  • ▸Signing in to Epic privately on public Wi-Fi
  • ▸Seeing the Epic store as it looks back home
  • ▸Checking whether a proxy adds delay before a match
  • ▸Reading Fortnite news privately while travelling

Which proxy type should I pick for Fortnite?

Residential is the sensible starting point here. Datacenter costs less when a site accepts server addresses; mobile and premium earn their higher price only in the cases described below.

Type Choose it when… From, per GB
Datacenter Cost matters most and the site is happy with addresses from server companies. Good for public pages and first experiments. $2.49
Residential Our pick for Fortnite A site turns server addresses away, or you want to see it the way a local visitor does. The address belongs to a home broadband line. $3.98
Mobile 4G/5G The service is built around phones, or you want to see it as someone on 4G or 5G would. The address comes from a phone network. $4.98
Residential Premium Standard residential keeps being refused on one particular site. Hand-picked home addresses, at a higher price per GB. $6.99

Choosing a country: Pick one near you, or near the game's servers if you know where they are. A longer route adds delay. There are 55+ countries, and in major markets some types let you pick a city too. Browse locations

For the longer version, our proxy comparison walks through all four types.

What you need for game websites and shops

Wherever you set it up, you type in the same four details from your dashboard: the host (the proxy's address), the port (a number that tells the connection which door to use), a username and a password.

Usual place for this

In one browser

Firefox has its own proxy settings, so only Firefox uses the proxy. On Windows and Mac, Chrome and Edge follow the computer's settings instead.

Step-by-step: Chrome · Firefox · Edge

Setting it up somewhere else? Step-by-step guides:

On your phone or computer: iPhone · Android · Windows · Mac

Inside an app, tool or script: Python · cURL

Two ways to log in to the proxy

  • ▸Username and password. The host:port:user:pass details that browsers, apps and scripts ask for.
  • ▸IP whitelist. Add your own IP address to the list in your dashboard and connections from it need no password. Handy where there's nowhere to type one, such as Android's Wi-Fi proxy screen.

Which protocol?

A protocol is the language your device uses to talk to the proxy. Every proxy works over HTTP, HTTPS and SOCKS5; if an app asks for SOCKS5 by name, give it SOCKS5 details, and put HTTP details in an HTTP box.

Common slip-ups, and the quick fix for each

When something feels off on a first try, it's often one of these.

Logging in on a rotating address

Rotating means a new address for every request; sticky means one address kept for 1-30 minutes. Use sticky for anything you sign in to, or the site may log you out halfway through.

A slip in the proxy details

One wrong character in the host, port, username or password and nothing connects. Copy them again from your dashboard and try them in our proxy checker. Using the IP whitelist? Home IP addresses change now and then, so check yours with the IP checker and update the list.

Expecting smoother matches

A proxy adds a stop on the way to the game server, so play rarely gets any smoother through one. If a match lags, switch the proxy off before trying anything else.

Pages load slowly

Home connections vary in speed. Pick a proxy country nearer to you and try again before changing anything else.

Proxy not working when it arrives? Tell us within 24 hours of delivery and we'll swap it, or refund that part of the order if we can't (see the refund policy). Support answers 24/7 through the contact page.

Is a proxy for Fortnite allowed?

Using a proxy is legal in most countries (a few restrict them), so the question is what you do through it: stick to public information and your own accounts, at a sensible pace, within the service's terms and the law where you live.

Games set their own rules, and many forbid bots, account sharing or selling in-game items for real money. A proxy changes your address, not those rules or what happens to an account that breaks them.

If personal data is involved, data-protection law applies as well, and no proxy can protect an account from a platform's own decisions.

Keeping the cost down

You pay for data by the GB, never for time, so set the proxy in the one browser or app that needs it and switch it off when you're done.

Start with a small order

Buy a little Residential data first, at $3.98 per GB, and try it where you need it. Top up once it works.

Use it within 30 days

Each order runs for 30 days from payment, and GB you haven't used don't carry over, so buy for the weeks ahead rather than the year.

Match the type to the site

Leave easy sites on datacenter and send only the stubborn ones through residential, mobile or premium. Mixing types keeps the bill small.

Questions beginners ask about Fortnite

Turn the proxy off wherever you added it, whether in Windows, on your router or in the console's network settings, then restart Fortnite. If the problem continues without it, check Epic's public server status page before changing anything else. A proxy won't find you easier lobbies either; matchmaking follows your region and skill.
Don't. Prices are set per country, and a purchase from an address that doesn't match your account and payment details can fail or be flagged as fraud, which can lock your account. Buy through the official store on your device, or with V-Bucks cards sold in your own country.
No. Matchmaking looks at how you play, not only where you connect from, and trying to game it can break Epic's rules. Pick a region with low ping in the settings and play your own matches.
With a proxy you trust, yes: Epic's sign-in is encrypted, so the proxy can't read your password. Turn on two-factor authentication in your Epic account settings as well, because that protects you far more than any connection choice.
Because your data now visits the proxy before it reaches Epic's servers. Choose a proxy near your matchmaking region or switch it off for matches. Here, proxies are for privacy and browsing, not for shaving milliseconds.
PlayStation's internet settings include a proxy option, but it only takes an address and port, so you'd whitelist your home IP in the dashboard instead of using a password. For matches we'd leave it off; a console plays well on a direct, wired connection.
