Proxy for Minecraft: a beginner's guide

Many Minecraft servers turn proxies away, and that's their right. Where one does make sense, such as privacy or testing your own server, here's how to start.

Minecraft and proxies for beginners: Java, Bedrock and server rules

Think of a proxy as a forwarding address: traffic goes to it first and then on to the server. In Minecraft that rarely helps, because the game connects straight to whichever server you join and has no proxy setting in its menus. Before you buy anything, check which edition you play, Java or Bedrock, since what you can connect to differs.

Java or Bedrock decides your options

Java Edition on computers can join any server address you type in. Bedrock on Xbox, PlayStation and Switch officially offers a list of Featured Servers plus Mojang's own subscription servers, so on consoles a proxy has nothing to work with.

Some servers switch proxies off

Java server owners can turn on a setting that kicks players whose connection doesn't match where Mojang's login check came from, and some networks block known VPN and proxy addresses. That's the owner's rule to make; if you're refused, connect normally instead of hunting for a workaround.

Account basics

Minecraft signs in with a Microsoft account now, so protect it with two-step verification. Never buy cheap 'alt' accounts or use cracked launchers; both often come from stolen logins and can disappear overnight, along with anything you built.

A proxy in the browser instead

If you want a different address for reading a server's website or a store page from another country, add the proxy to one browser. Datacenter, the low-cost type from server companies, is fine for that; leave the game itself on your normal connection.

Quick start in three steps

Nothing to install. This is the whole route, from paying to the first page you load through the proxy.

1

Buy a small Residential plan

Choose a small bundle, or just the GB (gigabytes of data) you need, and pay. Then, under My Plans → Proxy Configuration in your dashboard, set the country, the protocol, and sticky (one address that stays put) or rotating (a new one each time).

2

Add it to one browser

Use the proxy in one browser for the game's website, forums or shop. The game and its launcher can keep their normal connection, which is usually quicker.

3

Check that it worked

With the proxy switched on, open our IP checker: it should show the proxy's address, not your own. The IP location lookup then tells you which country that address is in, and if anything looks wrong, the quick fixes further down cover the usual slips. About to log in somewhere? Switch to a sticky session first, so the address stays put.

Our pick for Minecraft: Residential

Joining servers from shared Wi-Fi more privately, or checking how your own server behaves for friends abroad: those are the honest proxy jobs in Minecraft. Residential suits them, because its addresses come from home internet providers rather than server companies. Expect some servers to refuse proxies of every kind.

✓

Get past IP-based server filters

Many servers filter out VPN and hosting-company addresses to keep away spam bots and banned players. If a server you like does this, play from your normal connection or ask its staff. A filter is the owner's rule, and a proxy is never a way back after a ban.

✓

Steady play with sticky sessions

A sticky session holds your address steady for a while instead of switching it with each connection. In a game you stay connected to, an address change can kick you from the server, so use sticky; if you still get dropped now and then, play directly.

✓

Routing matched to a region

Choose a proxy country near the server's host. If you run your own server, a proxy elsewhere is a handy way to check how friends abroad will connect, as long as your server's own settings allow proxy connections.

✓

Ordinary proxy support

Java Edition has no proxy box in its settings, so routing it usually means a separate program set to SOCKS5, the protocol made for apps rather than browsers. Your proxy's username and password go into that program, not into the game.

What a proxy won't do here

It won't lower your ping, the delay between you and the game server. And it won't make bots, extra accounts or account sharing acceptable to a game that forbids them.

What people use it for

  • ▸Joining servers privately from shared Wi-Fi
  • ▸Checking how your own server looks from abroad
  • ▸Testing whether a different route lowers your ping
  • ▸Keeping your home IP out of server logs

Which proxy type should I pick for Minecraft?

Residential is the sensible starting point here. Datacenter costs less when a site accepts server addresses; mobile and premium earn their higher price only in the cases described below.

Type Choose it when… From, per GB
Datacenter Cost matters most and the site is happy with addresses from server companies. Good for public pages and first experiments. $2.49
Residential Our pick for Minecraft A site turns server addresses away, or you want to see it the way a local visitor does. The address belongs to a home broadband line. $3.98
Mobile 4G/5G The service is built around phones, or you want to see it as someone on 4G or 5G would. The address comes from a phone network. $4.98
Residential Premium Standard residential keeps being refused on one particular site. Hand-picked home addresses, at a higher price per GB. $6.99

Choosing a country: Pick one near you, or near the game's servers if you know where they are. A longer route adds delay. There are 55+ countries, and in major markets some types let you pick a city too. Browse locations

For the longer version, our proxy comparison walks through all four types.

What you need for game websites and shops

Wherever you set it up, you type in the same four details from your dashboard: the host (the proxy's address), the port (a number that tells the connection which door to use), a username and a password.

Usual place for this

In one browser

Firefox has its own proxy settings, so only Firefox uses the proxy. On Windows and Mac, Chrome and Edge follow the computer's settings instead.

Step-by-step: Chrome · Firefox · Edge

On your phone or computer: iPhone · Android · Windows · Mac

Inside an app, tool or script: Python · cURL

Two ways to log in to the proxy

  • ▸Username and password. The host:port:user:pass details that browsers, apps and scripts ask for.
  • ▸IP whitelist. Add your own IP address to the list in your dashboard and connections from it need no password. Handy where there's nowhere to type one, such as Android's Wi-Fi proxy screen.

Which protocol?

A protocol is the language your device uses to talk to the proxy. Every proxy works over HTTP, HTTPS and SOCKS5; if an app asks for SOCKS5 by name, give it SOCKS5 details, and put HTTP details in an HTTP box.

Common slip-ups, and the quick fix for each

When something feels off on a first try, it's often one of these.

Logging in on a rotating address

Rotating means a new address for every request; sticky means one address kept for 1-30 minutes. Use sticky for anything you sign in to, or the site may log you out halfway through.

A slip in the proxy details

One wrong character in the host, port, username or password and nothing connects. Copy them again from your dashboard and try them in our proxy checker. Using the IP whitelist? Home IP addresses change now and then, so check yours with the IP checker and update the list.

Expecting smoother matches

A proxy adds a stop on the way to the game server, so play rarely gets any smoother through one. If a match lags, switch the proxy off before trying anything else.

Pages load slowly

Home connections vary in speed. Pick a proxy country nearer to you and try again before changing anything else.

Proxy not working when it arrives? Tell us within 24 hours of delivery and we'll swap it, or refund that part of the order if we can't (see the refund policy). Support answers 24/7 through the contact page.

Is a proxy for Minecraft allowed?

Using a proxy is legal in most countries (a few restrict them), so the question is what you do through it: stick to public information and your own accounts, at a sensible pace, within the service's terms and the law where you live.

Games set their own rules, and many forbid bots, account sharing or selling in-game items for real money. A proxy changes your address, not those rules or what happens to an account that breaks them.

If personal data is involved, data-protection law applies as well, and no proxy can protect an account from a platform's own decisions.

Keeping the cost down

You pay for data by the GB, never for time, so set the proxy in the one browser or app that needs it and switch it off when you're done.

Start with a small order

Buy a little Residential data first, at $3.98 per GB, and try it where you need it. Top up once it works.

Use it within 30 days

Each order runs for 30 days from payment, and GB you haven't used don't carry over, so buy for the weeks ahead rather than the year.

Match the type to the site

Leave easy sites on datacenter and send only the stubborn ones through residential, mobile or premium. Mixing types keeps the bill small.

Questions beginners ask about Minecraft

Please don't try. Server bans are the owner's decision, and rejoining from another address is getting round the ban, which servers usually treat as a further offence. If you think it was a mistake, use the server's appeal form or Discord. A Microsoft ban from online play covers every server, whatever address you use.
Hardly ever. Lag in Minecraft is often the server struggling, which shows as blocks reappearing or mobs freezing, rather than your own connection. Check the server's status channels and lower your render distance; a proxy adds distance and usually makes ping worse.
That server has chosen to refuse proxy and VPN connections, usually to keep out spammers. Switch the proxy off and join from your normal connection. If you have a good reason to need one, ask the server's staff, and never use a different address to rejoin after a ban.
Your account is a Microsoft account, protected by its password and two-step verification rather than by your connection. A proxy doesn't put it at risk, and it doesn't protect it either. Turn on two-step verification and never type your login into sites offering free items.
Rarely. Lag on busy servers usually comes from the server itself struggling, or from your Wi-Fi. A proxy only adds a stop. Try a server closer to you, or a cable, before spending anything.
No. Friends join with your server's address as normal, and a proxy only matters if someone wants extra privacy. If you host a server, look at its settings for proxy and VPN connections so you know what your players will run into.
