Proxy for Path of Exile: a beginner's guide

Path of Exile lag is usually fixed in the game's own gateway and network settings. A proxy suits the trade site and forums; here's how to use one simply.

Start here

Lag in Path of Exile? Start with the gateway list, not a proxy

Put simply, a proxy is a middle computer that passes your traffic on, so websites see its address instead of yours. For Path of Exile, the free fix for lag comes first: the gateway list on the login screen, which shows the delay to each server location. A proxy can't move Grinding Gear Games' servers closer, and it adds a stop of its own.

Choosing a gateway

On the login screen, open the gateway list and choose the location with the lowest ping, meaning the time a message takes to reach the server and come back. If two are close, try each for an evening of mapping and keep whichever feels steadier.

Why the game ignores most proxy settings

Path of Exile's options have no proxy field, and the proxy switch in Windows is mainly used by browsers, so the game keeps connecting directly even when that switch is on. Forcing it through a proxy takes separate routing software, which is more fuss than most players need.

Starting small on type

Datacenter, an address rented from a server company, is the low-cost type and plenty for browsing. Residential and mobile 4G/5G addresses cost more per GB and do nothing for the game's own connection, so buy a small amount and top up only if you use it.

Ban-worthy habits

Grinding Gear Games forbids buying currency or items for real money, and its tool rules allow a macro only if you start it yourself and it does one set job per press. Anything that plays the game for you breaks the rules, with or without a proxy.

Quick start in three steps

Nothing to install. This is the whole route, from paying to the first page you load through the proxy.

1

Buy a small Datacenter plan

On the order form, pick a country, a protocol and a login method, then pay. At $2.49 per GB (gigabyte of data) it costs less than our other types, so a first test is cheap.

2

Add it to one browser

Use the proxy in one browser for the game's website, forums or shop. The game and its launcher can keep their normal connection, which is usually quicker.

3

Check that it worked

With the proxy switched on, open our IP checker: it should show the proxy's address, not your own. The IP location lookup then tells you which country that address is in, and if anything looks wrong, the quick fixes further down cover the usual slips. Address right, but one site still turns you away? The last of the fixes below covers that.

Our pick for Path of Exile: Datacenter

Path of Exile's website, trade pages and forums are ordinary web pages, and they load fine through datacenter addresses, which come from server providers rather than people's homes. That type sits at the budget end of our four. The game client gains nothing from a pricier home or phone address, so there's no reason to pay for one.

✓

Smooth instanced play

Most rubber-banding in Path of Exile is desync, a gap between your screen and the server. The game's own cure is in its options: switching the networking mode to lockstep makes it wait for the server before showing your moves, which no proxy can do for you.

✓

Pick the nearest gateway

The login screen lets you choose a gateway, the server location your games run through. Try the nearest ones first. If you add a proxy as well, put it close to that same gateway so the route doesn't stretch.

✓

A connection that lasts the league

Leagues run for months, so keep your setup easy to undo. If you route the game, use a sticky session, where the proxy holds the same address for a while, and note down how to switch it off for the evening it misbehaves.

✓

Immediate, frictionless access

Once you've paid, the proxy is ready in your dashboard. For the trade site and forums, enter it in your browser. The game client would need a separate routing program that sends one app through a proxy, which is optional and worth testing before you rely on it.

What a proxy won't do here

It won't lower your ping, the delay between you and the game server. And it won't make bots, extra accounts or account sharing acceptable to a game that forbids them.

What people use it for

  • ▸Browsing the official trade site privately
  • ▸Reading patch notes and build guides on public Wi-Fi
  • ▸Testing a routed connection for one evening
  • ▸Using one small plan for both games' websites

Which proxy type should I pick for Path of Exile?

The usual rule is to start with the type that costs least and step up only when a site says no. Here, datacenter is enough to begin with.

Type Choose it when… From, per GB
Datacenter Our pick for Path of Exile Cost matters most and the site is happy with addresses from server companies. Good for public pages and first experiments. $2.49
Residential A site turns server addresses away, or you want to see it the way a local visitor does. The address belongs to a home broadband line. $3.98
Mobile 4G/5G The service is built around phones, or you want to see it as someone on 4G or 5G would. The address comes from a phone network. $4.98
Residential Premium Standard residential keeps being refused on one particular site. Hand-picked home addresses, at a higher price per GB. $6.99

Choosing a country: Pick one near you, or near the game's servers if you know where they are. A longer route adds delay. There are 55+ countries, and in major markets some types let you pick a city too. Browse locations

For the longer version, our proxy comparison walks through all four types.

What you need for game websites and shops

Wherever you set it up, you type in the same four details from your dashboard: the host (the proxy's address), the port (a number that tells the connection which door to use), a username and a password.

Usual place for this

In one browser

Firefox has its own proxy settings, so only Firefox uses the proxy. On Windows and Mac, Chrome and Edge follow the computer's settings instead.

Step-by-step: Chrome · Firefox · Edge

On your phone or computer: iPhone · Android · Windows · Mac

Inside an app, tool or script: Python · cURL

Two ways to log in to the proxy

  • ▸Username and password. The host:port:user:pass details that browsers, apps and scripts ask for.
  • ▸IP whitelist. Add your own IP address to the list in your dashboard and connections from it need no password. Handy where there's nowhere to type one, such as Android's Wi-Fi proxy screen.

Which protocol?

A protocol is the language your device uses to talk to the proxy. Every proxy works over HTTP, HTTPS and SOCKS5; if an app asks for SOCKS5 by name, give it SOCKS5 details, and put HTTP details in an HTTP box.

Common slip-ups, and the quick fix for each

When something feels off on a first try, it's often one of these.

Logging in on a rotating address

Rotating means a new address for every request; sticky means one address kept for 1-30 minutes. Use sticky for anything you sign in to, or the site may log you out halfway through.

A slip in the proxy details

One wrong character in the host, port, username or password and nothing connects. Copy them again from your dashboard and try them in our proxy checker. Using the IP whitelist? Home IP addresses change now and then, so check yours with the IP checker and update the list.

Expecting smoother matches

A proxy adds a stop on the way to the game server, so play rarely gets any smoother through one. If a match lags, switch the proxy off before trying anything else.

A site keeps refusing the address

Some sites turn away addresses from server companies however gently you go. Retrying won't change that, so move just that site to residential.

Is a proxy for Path of Exile allowed?

Using a proxy is legal in most countries (a few restrict them), so the question is what you do through it: stick to public information and your own accounts, at a sensible pace, within the service's terms and the law where you live.

Games set their own rules, and many forbid bots, account sharing or selling in-game items for real money. A proxy changes your address, not those rules or what happens to an account that breaks them.

If personal data is involved, data-protection law applies as well, and no proxy can protect an account from a platform's own decisions.

Keeping the cost down

You pay for data by the GB, never for time, so set the proxy in the one browser or app that needs it and switch it off when you're done.

Start with a small order

Buy a little Datacenter data first, at $2.49 per GB, and try it where you need it. Top up once it works.

Use it within 30 days

Each order runs for 30 days from payment, and GB you haven't used don't carry over, so buy for the weeks ahead rather than the year.

Match the type to the site

Leave easy sites on datacenter and send only the stubborn ones through residential, mobile or premium. Mixing types keeps the bill small.

Questions beginners ask about Path of Exile

Usually not. Lag comes from the route between your home and the gateway, and a proxy adds another stop to it. Because the game has no proxy setting, trying one would also mean installing extra routing software. Pick the nearest gateway and use a cable instead of Wi-Fi first; both cost nothing.
Yes, and that's the tidy way to do it. Put the proxy into a browser that has its own proxy settings, or into a proxy extension in a spare browser profile, and leave Windows alone. The game keeps its normal connection while that browser shows pages through the proxy's address.
No. Buying or selling items or currency for real money breaks Grinding Gear Games' terms, and the penalty lands on the account whatever connection it used. Trade in game for in-game currency, and keep the proxy for privacy.
No. A proxy isn't tied to one game, so the same details work for either game's website and trade pages. The same advice applies to both: try the game's own server choice before thinking about a proxy.
Yes, the same address and login work in both places. Everything you send through it shares one data allowance, so keep video and big downloads off it and the plan will last.
Turn the routing off and try again. If it connects directly, recheck the proxy's address, port and login, and confirm it's set to SOCKS5, the protocol routing programs use. If it only fails through the proxy, play directly; a proxy isn't worth a lost evening.
