Proxy for RuneScape: a beginner's guide

On hotel or campus Wi-Fi, a home-country residential proxy can keep your RuneScape or OSRS login private. Jagex's login checks still apply, and they help you.

Old School and RuneScape 3 for newcomers: worlds, launchers and proxies

In plain terms, a proxy is a relay that forwards your traffic, so the other end sees the relay's address. For RuneScape the bigger lever is the world you pick: each world sits in a real location, and choosing a nearby one lowers lag for free. New accounts are created as Jagex Accounts, and on a computer you sign in through the Jagex Launcher, so start there.

Pick a world near you

The world list shows a flag for each world's location, and US East and US West are labelled separately. Choose one close to you, stay off PvP and high-risk worlds while learning, and note that some worlds need a minimum total level.

Only two extra clients are approved

For Old School, Jagex approves RuneLite and HDOS alongside its own client, and warns that other third-party clients can lead to permanent action against your account. Download them from their official sites, or through the Jagex Launcher where it offers them.

What Jagex bans

Bots, buying or selling gold, paid levelling services and letting someone else use your account all break Jagex's rules. Want membership without spending money? Bonds, bought with in-game gold on the Grand Exchange, are the official way to do it.

If you still want a proxy

The game has no proxy setting, so a proxy mostly helps in a browser, for example to view the official site as another country sees it. Datacenter proxies, which use addresses from hosting firms, are enough for that and cost less per GB than residential.

Quick start in three steps

Nothing to install. This is the whole route, from paying to the first page you load through the proxy.

1

Buy a small Residential plan

Choose a small bundle, or just the GB (gigabytes of data) you need, and pay. Then, under My Plans → Proxy Configuration in your dashboard, set the country, the protocol, and sticky (one address that stays put) or rotating (a new one each time).

2

Add it to one browser

Use the proxy in one browser for the game's website, forums or shop. The game and its launcher can keep their normal connection, which is usually quicker.

3

Check that it worked

With the proxy switched on, open our IP checker: it should show the proxy's address, not your own. The IP location lookup then tells you which country that address is in, and if anything looks wrong, the quick fixes further down cover the usual slips. About to log in somewhere? Switch to a sticky session first, so the address stays put.

Our pick for RuneScape: Residential

The sensible proxy job in RuneScape is a private connection when you sign in to your own account on hotel or campus Wi-Fi. Residential suits it: these are the addresses internet providers give to ordinary homes, much like the line you probably play on now. It costs less than mobile 4G/5G and changes nothing else.

✓

A real-ISP connection footprint

Pick an address in your home country, and while you travel, the sites you visit see a home-country connection instead of the hotel's network. It's a privacy choice, not a disguise: your account, its history and Jagex's security checks stay exactly as they were.

✓

Sticky sessions for play

A sticky session keeps one address for a while instead of changing it. Use sticky for anything you're logged into; with rotation, an address change could cut a skilling or questing session short.

✓

Geo-matched access

The world list shows where each RuneScape world is hosted. Choose worlds near you, and if you use a proxy, keep it in a country near those worlds too. If Jagex asks you to confirm a login after you travel, that's protection for your account, so complete it.

✓

At home with the official client

Play on the official client from Jagex's website or the Jagex Launcher, never from unofficial downloads that ask for your login. If your client has no proxy setting, don't hunt for workarounds; use the proxy for the website, account pages and forums in your browser instead.

What a proxy won't do here

It won't lower your ping, the delay between you and the game server. And it won't make bots, extra accounts or account sharing acceptable to a game that forbids them.

What people use it for

  • ▸Signing in privately on hotel or café Wi-Fi
  • ▸A home-country connection while you travel
  • ▸Reading the official forums and wiki privately
  • ▸Keeping your own account on one steady connection

Which proxy type should I pick for RuneScape?

Residential is the sensible starting point here. Datacenter costs less when a site accepts server addresses; mobile and premium earn their higher price only in the cases described below.

Type Choose it when… From, per GB
Datacenter Cost matters most and the site is happy with addresses from server companies. Good for public pages and first experiments. $2.49
Residential Our pick for RuneScape A site turns server addresses away, or you want to see it the way a local visitor does. The address belongs to a home broadband line. $3.98
Mobile 4G/5G The service is built around phones, or you want to see it as someone on 4G or 5G would. The address comes from a phone network. $4.98
Residential Premium Standard residential keeps being refused on one particular site. Hand-picked home addresses, at a higher price per GB. $6.99

Choosing a country: Pick one near you, or near the game's servers if you know where they are. A longer route adds delay. There are 55+ countries, and in major markets some types let you pick a city too. Browse locations

For the longer version, our proxy comparison walks through all four types.

What you need for game websites and shops

Wherever you set it up, you type in the same four details from your dashboard: the host (the proxy's address), the port (a number that tells the connection which door to use), a username and a password.

Usual place for this

In one browser

Firefox has its own proxy settings, so only Firefox uses the proxy. On Windows and Mac, Chrome and Edge follow the computer's settings instead.

Step-by-step: Chrome · Firefox · Edge

Setting it up somewhere else? Step-by-step guides:

On your phone or computer: iPhone · Android · Windows · Mac

Inside an app, tool or script: Python · cURL

Two ways to log in to the proxy

  • ▸Username and password. The host:port:user:pass details that browsers, apps and scripts ask for.
  • ▸IP whitelist. Add your own IP address to the list in your dashboard and connections from it need no password. Handy where there's nowhere to type one, such as Android's Wi-Fi proxy screen.

Which protocol?

A protocol is the language your device uses to talk to the proxy. Every proxy works over HTTP, HTTPS and SOCKS5; if an app asks for SOCKS5 by name, give it SOCKS5 details, and put HTTP details in an HTTP box.

Common slip-ups, and the quick fix for each

When something feels off on a first try, it's often one of these.

Logging in on a rotating address

Rotating means a new address for every request; sticky means one address kept for 1-30 minutes. Use sticky for anything you sign in to, or the site may log you out halfway through.

A slip in the proxy details

One wrong character in the host, port, username or password and nothing connects. Copy them again from your dashboard and try them in our proxy checker. Using the IP whitelist? Home IP addresses change now and then, so check yours with the IP checker and update the list.

Expecting smoother matches

A proxy adds a stop on the way to the game server, so play rarely gets any smoother through one. If a match lags, switch the proxy off before trying anything else.

Pages load slowly

Home connections vary in speed. Pick a proxy country nearer to you and try again before changing anything else.

Proxy not working when it arrives? Tell us within 24 hours of delivery and we'll swap it, or refund that part of the order if we can't (see the refund policy). Support answers 24/7 through the contact page.

Is a proxy for RuneScape allowed?

Using a proxy is legal in most countries (a few restrict them), so the question is what you do through it: stick to public information and your own accounts, at a sensible pace, within the service's terms and the law where you live.

Games set their own rules, and many forbid bots, account sharing or selling in-game items for real money. A proxy changes your address, not those rules or what happens to an account that breaks them.

If personal data is involved, data-protection law applies as well, and no proxy can protect an account from a platform's own decisions.

Keeping the cost down

You pay for data by the GB, never for time, so set the proxy in the one browser or app that needs it and switch it off when you're done.

Start with a small order

Buy a little Residential data first, at $3.98 per GB, and try it where you need it. Top up once it works.

Use it within 30 days

Each order runs for 30 days from payment, and GB you haven't used don't carry over, so buy for the weeks ahead rather than the year.

Match the type to the site

Leave easy sites on datacenter and send only the stubborn ones through residential, mobile or premium. Mixing types keeps the bill small.

Questions beginners ask about RuneScape

Simply connecting through one isn't among the rule breaks Jagex lists. Trouble comes from what you do: bots, sharing your account or trading gold for money. Whatever your connection, switch on an authenticator for your Jagex Account and keep its recovery details up to date.
Usually not. Phone disconnects often come from the handset switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or from battery saving pausing the app. Pick a nearby world, keep the app in the foreground and turn off battery saving for it; a proxy adds one more link that can drop.
Because something about the sign-in looks new, such as a different device or location. The check is there to stop someone else getting into your account, so answer it. Turning on two-step verification with an authenticator app, which Jagex recommends, makes the account much harder to steal.
Jagex's rules are aimed at behaviour: bots, gold farming, real-world trading and sharing accounts are all banned, and a proxy makes none of them acceptable. Using one for a private connection to the account you play by hand is a different thing entirely.
Residential, in your home country, if you want a private connection for your own account while you're away. Datacenter costs less and is fine for browsing the website and forums. Mobile 4G/5G costs more and adds nothing for this job.
Switch the proxy off and try again. If the game connects directly, the problem is in the setup: check the address, port, username and password, and make sure the session is sticky. If it only fails through the proxy, simply play without it.
