Behind the Great Firewall: a beginner's take on China IPs
A mainland China IP address, which websites treat as a rough map pin for your location, puts you behind the Great Firewall, the system that blocks many foreign websites inside China. That makes it good for one thing above all: seeing the Chinese internet the way people there do. You can check prices in yuan, see what Baidu shows for a search, or test if your own website loads in China.
What it's good for
Anyone selling abroad can see how their products show up on Chinese platforms, students practise reading Simplified Chinese on real sites, and website owners test whether their pages load properly for visitors in Beijing or Shanghai.
What stays blocked
Google, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Wikipedia are all blocked in mainland China. Through a China IP they simply won't load, so a China connection lets you experience that wall, never get round it.
One time zone, simplified script
All of China runs on one clock, Beijing Time at UTC+8, so a midnight sale starts at the same moment from Harbin to Kunming. Mainland sites use Simplified Chinese characters, and machine translation in your browser gives you the gist.
Phone numbers and real names
Many Chinese apps ask for a Chinese phone number to sign up, and online games require real-name registration. A proxy changes neither, and a site's own rules apply to you just as they would at home.
Simple first projects in China
Whatever you use it for, the law where you live and each website's terms still apply, and our acceptable use policy lists what we never allow.
The basics, in plain English
Websites read your IP address, your connection's number online, to work out where you are. A proxy lends you one of ours from the country you pick; your language settings, clock, card and delivery address stay as they are, and sites you sign in to still know it's you.
