Fares, Tết closures and MoMo limits: Vietnam explained for first-timers
Prices in Vietnam run to long strings of digits, because one đồng, Vietnam's currency unit, is worth very little, and pages are full of tone marks that change a word's meaning. A Vietnamese proxy fetches each page from inside Vietnam and passes it back to you, so airline fares, shop stock and your own website appear as they would to someone in Hanoi.
Fares, stock checks and your own site
Checking VietJet or Vietnam Airlines fares in đồng before a trip, seeing whether a Vietnamese store lists a phone as in stock, or opening your own website to find out how it looks to someone browsing from Ho Chi Minh City.
Tone marks change meaning
Written Vietnamese uses the Latin alphabet plus small marks above and below letters, and those marks change meaning completely, so ma, má and mã are different words. Your browser's translate button handles most pages well enough to compare prices.
Clock and the Tết holiday
Vietnam is on UTC+7 all year, the same time as Bangkok and Jakarta, with no summer change. Tết, the Lunar New Year, falls in late January or February and shuts many shops and deliveries for several days, so expect slow replies then.
Games and rules that stay put
Many Vietnamese players use local editions, such as Liên Quân Mobile, the Vietnamese version of Arena of Valor. A Vietnamese IP doesn't move an account between editions, and game and shop terms still apply wherever your connection appears to be.
Simple first projects in Vietnam
Whatever you use it for, the law where you live and each website's terms still apply, and our acceptable use policy lists what we never allow.
The basics, in plain English
Websites read your IP address, your connection's number online, to work out where you are. A proxy lends you one of ours from the country you pick; your language settings, clock, card and delivery address stay as they are, and sites you sign in to still know it's you.
